Thought I'd ask on here as any medical websites just frighten the life out of me...
I've had real bad pain in the si region for about 4 weeks now. 3 visits to the chiro have made it better but it's still painful and there's a lot of heat.
Have been to the GP as well, she was absolutely NO help whatsoever.
Anyway,i think the bones are ok now but something is still sore, I'm not sure if it's muscles or the actual joints (horror stories on some websites about this!!)
Of course the weather has not helped things at all, with the horses in 24/7 and no water...
So, I'm wondering whether to try Bowen?? or sportsmassage??
or any supplements?? I'm already taking msm and glusamine, omega 3 etc..
Any advice anyone can give me to get rid of this pain would be greatly appreciated - am really worried that this will seriously affect my riding and abitity to look after the horses...

Thanks a lot.

I had problems with my sacroilliac for years until it became really bad and I went to a chiropractor. She mended it pretty quickly and after my last treatment it continued to get better and has been ok since. She said mine was caused bu having tight hamstrings and showed me exercises to stretch them.
It was the folding up and cracking the joint that relieved the painn!!

Perhaps it will just take a few more visits to the chiropractor. I think I had 6 or 7 treatments

Yes I'm qualified in Sports Massage and have done 3 years of an Osteopathy degree. Doctors will often treat symptoms, ie. give you painkillers, but not address the underlying cause of the problem. I would go to an Osteopath. They will look at what is causing the problem, rather than treating just the symptoms.

Try Bowen, I went originally for sacro iliac pain (horse related) and since have developed psoriatic arthritis so get aches all over the place but Bowen is the one thing that keeps me sane! you have to be committed and have regular treatment...when I first started it was once every 2 weeks but am now out to every 2 or 3 months. I'm on all the supplements that you mention plus Co-enzyme Q10...it gets to the point that you are not quite sure which one is doing the job but the combination seems to work. good luck.

Can I ask if the onset 4 weeks ago was after anything in particular a fall maybe/change in footwear?
I'd say to try a few more treatments with the chiropractor as 3 is not that much to make any major difference to yourself. Also you want to build some core exercise work into your routine to strengthen your tummy muscles and take pressure off your back and sacro-iliac joints.
You could have a sports massage and they could spend some time getting to wrk into your buttocks as sometimes when the piriformis muscle is tight this can pull on the sacro-iliac joint.
Are you doing any stretches at the moment for your low back, and is the chiro doing any soft tissue work with you?
I'm in private healthcare (won't say which one as not advertising), and would also recommend some acupuncture (if you can cope with it) I do a range of treatment for SI joints-manipulation, soft tissue work and acupuncture sometimes a combined approach works well.
The good news is 4 weeks is not that long to have an SI problem for so hopefully will be faster to get on top of. The bad news is they are a complexed entity and can sometimes be stubborn to get rid of.

Some chiros and physios also treat the cause and look at the overall reason for the problem, rather then chasing the symptoms. You've just got to go to a good one.
I think osteopaths, chiro's and physio's, are all trying to get people better, we should therefore work together. But do also understand what you say, as in all our professions some aren't as good!

I live wutha chiropractor - which sounds great but pinning him down to actually treat my own back is nye on impossible!

I also suffer from problems in my SI, on both sides and it is also aggrevated by the cold weather - and riding. IMO, find a good chiropractor who can advise on exercises you can do to the stretch the affected muscles - once these start to relax, they will stop pulling on the joint and causing the immflamation and heat. Takes time but aslong as you're careful and don't over do it, it should start to ease. You can then maintain the treatment from the chiropractor with out having to go back anywhere near as often. There are always horror stories about these things!
I know I have just said all of the above, but I don't actually do it myself, she says sat here with her legs crossed which is SO bad for your lower back...I really ought to listen to myself!!!

I have loose SI joints which cause problems. My lifeline is my ostepath and my sports therapist - both of whom ride.

If you're in surrey - or nearby - pm me and I can give you details.

I would say I had tried other chiropractors etc previously some of whom had made the problem very much worse; partly because I'm also hypermobile. Do change practitioners if you want to. Try getting local reccommendations if you can.

Thanks a lot, at least I seem to be doing the right thing. Have been seeing this chiro for about 3 years now, usually every 3 or 4 months but never had pain like this before! I started seeing her because she is horsey but she doesn't do soft tissue.
have a very good osteo for the horses who treats people as well, i might give him a go.
Guess I'll just have to be patient... and get OH to do all the mucking out, poo picking etc...

I had a sacroiliac injure about 14 months ago. I was ridding and trying to open up my hips when I felt a sharp pain right in the sacroilic.

My doctor was no use whatsoever, but physio was great!

Things I have found work well:
- if you are in a lot of pain anti-inflammatories help but as for Diclofenac, it's the only decent one
- regular visits to the physio. Mine works specifically on my sacroiliac, e.g. rotating and hip exercises
- pilates is brilliant and I can often releave the pain myself by doing rolls
- Back Friend

is brilliant for the car/office/sofa. OH has serious lumbar problems but also loves the Back Friend.

- treeless saddle: for me this is a godsent and tantamount to going to the physio. Don't really know why but it works!

I had managed to get rid of the pain completely but I then twisted my ankle really badly and all the hobbling brought it back. At the moment I am still working on getting rid of the pain again!

Ask your chiro about "wet icing" if done correctly this will really help.

Oooh you have my sympathies!

I rotated my sacro-iliac joints in opposite directions in a fall - the pain was immense!

I found the best cure for it was (cocodamols) and chiropractor treatment - howevever I did have Bowen as well which was a lovely experience (well worth trying) I was going to the chiro three times a week for a long time though - it cost an arm and a leg to get me sorted out

Good luck!

I've had SI problems for about 30 years, and have tried many chiros, physios, Bowen, McTimony, osteos over the years. I've settled on a german lady called Ines Rusteberg who does Bowen, but is qualified in many other areas, she keeps me pain free so long as I go regularly.

E25 describes it perfectly. In my case my bum was too tight and when the physio started working on the knots I screamed, but then I relaxed and it improved so much that I cannot put into words. Other than "I'm fixed".

I twisted my sacroiliac after jumping off a horse during vaulting. This was when i was about 15 and lived with the pain until i was about 16 when my back went into spasm after alot of hockey at school. I went to the chiropractor for a few months and she did the thing where she 'popped' my lower back (I dont know how else to describe it) she sorted it right out but i still get a bit of stiffness in it after priods of inactivity.

this is an interesting post, i have had a bad back for years now and get sharp spasms in my back, i went to the doctor and got refered to a musculo sceletal unit in clevedon where i had x-rays of my back and pelvis, and some whitening showed up on my sacoliac joint on the x-ray which he is going to get radiology to look at and write a report up for me

but i start physio soon as well. if nothing comes of it and i still have problems after physio then i have to have more tests done.
