A few months ago my horse hurt his hind leg I had the vet out and they said there’s nothing they can do until swelling goes down, so gave me anti inflammatory to help with swelling, it is still a bit swollen but not as much so before I take him for X-rays or get the vet back out I was wondering if anyone has seen this before. Hoping you can access the photos below okay, as you can see his leg is constantly locked outwards and will not bend. In the second image is the lump that I noticed when this first happened (this lump has more or less gone now) I am hoping someone will know or have experienced this before and can give me some advice on what to do TIA x

In all honesty you should have got the vet back out after 3-5 days From the original injury. A ‘regular’ swelling would have gone down by then with anti-inflammatories if it was a soft tissue injury. It certainly would have dissipated enough for a more thorough examination.

If the horse has slipped his patella, there is a very large chance that bony changes have occurred to compensate for it being in this position for such a long time.

Agree with everyone - not sure what this is but think this is one for the vet. If your vet is a bit useless, possibly consider a different vets or ask your vet for a second opinion.

Don't ask your vet for a second opinion - he might not know or like any vets who are better than him. A second opinion means advice from a different vet.
:)

ETA: Poor little fellow. He looks like a sweety.

Is he a Shetland? I believe they are prone to problems in back leg bit like a slipped stifle. May be worth speaking to the breed society or a Shetland expert.

What I mean is ,I believe there is a breed specific problem related to Shetland hind legs. Possibly not all vets know about this. So if an experienced Shetland person , could shed some light that would help the ponies owner and be info for the vet.
