I have 2 horses that need a new home asap - have tried but not very hard to loan them with very little sucess but now they really have to go. Is it the current economic situation combined I guess with the onset of winter ? Has anyone sucessfully loaned a horse out recently ? I have considered giving them away instead but worried about the obvious pitfalls .....

Depends what they are like and what they can do. I know a couple of people at our RS are looking for loan horses. Two teenagers in particular that don't want to buy as in a couple of years they will be off to uni.

Yes, they are rideable - both allrounders, would be fine for RC etc. Have only advertised locally, mainly because I hoped to find them local homes .....maybe I should try further afield ?

East Midlands.

My advice would be to go to local riding schools, especially the better ones, look up approved BHS riding schools or where to train yards. Put an ad on their notice board and have a word with the owner.

When I nearly got a horse on loan a few years ago, it was the YO at the riding school that told me about the horse, he wasn't advertised, she'd just spoken to the owner at a show. She knew my share had just fallen through, and the horse was a former grade A showjumper that was a bit jaded and in need of a quieter but more varied life. I was planning to spend the loan period doing dressage and WH with him.

The two teenagers I'm thinking of currently ride (to a high standard) in the RS and have both told the YO and RI that they are looking. One previously had a loan and it fell through due to unsoundness of the horse.

I'm sure there are others at the same yard, I can think of a few people who have previously found loans/shares and stopped coming down. So providing your horses aren't nutters a riding school would be a good bet.

In fact if you need to find a home urgently a riding school might loan them from you. Ours has done that a few times too.

When I advertised my old boy for loan, (the only stipulation was that he stayed on his current yard) I put ads in all the usual places, tack shops, feed merchants, online, chiltern rider, horsequest etc, all with hardly any response at all. Then I put posters up in my local supermarkets and my phone started ringing, and i promptly had loads of people interested and I chose the person I liked most.

In the end the girl who I let him go to, had had ponies as a child, and had given up as she went through uni. By chance she saw my advert, which tempted her to get back into riding again. I also had quite a lot of novice people ring me up who had seen the ad in the supermarkets, and I would have been happy to let him go to a first timer, as he was to stay on my yard, so I could keep an eye on everything.

I think fewer people are looking at this time of year - most will wait until the spring now before looking to loan a new horse. Winter means bigger bills, more work, lots of mud and limited riding time for most people!

There are still people looking for loan though, as we have advertised our old pony recently and had four responses, two of which were unsuitable but two more are still to view. However, last time she went out on loan we advertised in the spring and we had loads of phonecalls and a loan home was found for her in less than a week.
