hi , im buying 2year old irish draft can anybody out there tell me a little bit about them.. are they good to back, nice ride, good to handle are they loving., do they make good jumpers or eventers.... would love to hear from anybody out there who owns an irish draft. gem xx

Try putting this on breeding it will soon get lost in NL , Janet George breeds IDs and will be sure to give you some good info. Put your horses breeding in and someone will be able to tell you more.
I would say they are lovely horses in general and can do well in all types of competitions.

They're great horses :) The ones I've known have been quite laid back to handle, break etc, virtually bombproof to hack, adapt to changes in routine/scenery like nothing has happened... but still plenty of character (my own is a complete clown/vandal!) They can have a bit of a stubborn streak but no badness in them.

Mine (see signature) and a lot of ones I've known, aren't loving as in the cuddly sense of the word, but they are friendly and do get quite attached to their 'people'. My fella is fairly outwardly grumpy, but he is actually quite fond of me and a couple of others who handle him regularly - he has his own little ways and is quite 'independent', but he occasionally likes a nice fuss and looks for reassurance if he's ever worried by anything :)

To give you an idea, my boy's sire competed very successfully at both dressage and showjumping. A lot of them are hunted, do very well at it so love going xc.

What breeding is your new ID?

They are fab horses, can do pretty much anything you ask of them. Bought mine when she was 5 and she is still being ridden 4/5 times a week at 23. Only veterinary problems I've had have been battle injuries due to her insisting on being the head mare in the field! She has jumped, hunted, team chased, xc, dressage. I rode her when I was pregnant and she does pony rides for the kids. Generally they are very kind, people friendly horses. Can be known to have a stubborn streak tho!!

Ok - everyone else is thinking this so I'll ask:-
Why are you buying a two year old Irish Draught if you know nothing about the breed?

had tb for 8 years so am used to complicated/high maintenace horses and i felt like somthing easier going was advised to get a ID seen one i liked an thats it......somtimes u love the look of somthing and go with it.

Fairly strong Pride of Shaunlara lines then! Out of interest, is he coming over from/did he originally come from Co Mayo?

Mine shares a few lines with yours - hope yours turns out as handsome as my boy :D

Good luck with him anyways, please post pics when he arrives ;)

they are wonderful horses! I have never met a bad one. They can be stubborn and independant, but you soon learn to ask not tell them to do something. :) Mine is 17 and still happily jumps 1.30. He loves his hacking and hunting, he adores jumping. He hates dressage (but in his defence nobody every schooled him until I got him 7 years ago!)

Mine is an IDx (not sure what with) but I'd say more ID than anything else. He is very much a one person horse, but will give so much love and respect! They can be a bit stroppy and stubborn, but I've found as soon as he is told he is wrong he never forgets it! He has such an old head on him for a 6yr old, completely bomb proof but forward going and fun. Takes a while to pick things up but once hes got it thats it, so great to teach and learn with. Forming a bond took a while but its been beyond rewarding :)

he my profile pic ,yer he did he's here now hes out in the field at the mo with some other youngsters.. i sure hope he is as handsome as your boy he is a real stunner, thanks for the post. x

JenHunt - Just fallen head over heels for your boy...Im a sucker for an Irish and unusually marked horses, let alone when you put the two together!

thankyou i know he's such a cuttie pie, i fell in love the min i seen him, somtime's u go with your heart insted of your brain..lol. but i think he will be good for me

They can take quite a while to mature physically - so his height as a 2 year old may well still go up a fair bit and with out doubt outwards !!!

I personally love the breed as a good allround horse you can go off and have fun with and will turn its hoof to most things

I love this breed of horse, they are gentle giants, but sensitive souls as well, they will give you there all and then still more. My girl is ID X TB out of Crofters Realm she does well at what ever is asked of her from Dressage to Jumping and can jump like a stag.
Due to my acident we can only do showing now, but we always do very well and every one comments as to how she floats aroung the ring, her paces are fantastic for a larger built hore, will not bore you anymore apart from they are a great breed with not a nasty bone in their body :)

thank you! he's a fruit loop sometimes, but he's an incredible horse. He'll give anything a try if you ask him, and he's 17 now and showing no sign of growing up yet!

The markings are caused by vitiligo, an auto-immune disease which makes his body attack the pigment in the cells. It doesn't bother him one bit, other than the fact he hates suncream being put on! :D

Uncomplicated, loving, beautiful, brave but not boring: still lots of personality in there.

this is so true. Ron is a super-charged cob. If he was a car he'd be a v8 Landrover defender. Not racecar quick, but gets to top speed very quickly! :D
