I am considering changing my car (Honda Civic) for a CR-V as I have recently bought a Bateson Deauville trailer and was wondering if anyone has any experience of towing with the CR-V.
I have driven Hondas for years and don't really want to change to another make as I love their reliability and economy.
It would only be to tow one 500kg horse in the Deauville, which weighs in at 806kg- so combined weight of just over 1300kg.
The max towing weight for the CR-V is 1500kg.

Thoughts anyone?

I haven't towed with one before, but don't forget that you need to add on the weight of your tack/rugs/equipment, yourself and any other people in the vehicle and any thing else in the car. I think if you had 2 passengers in the car you'd be overweight - it doesn't give you much weight to play with.

Hi, I have a CR-V and only ever change it to buy another, they are fantastic to drive and very reliable. I have never towed with mine but did think you could look on the Honda website and get the towing capacity from their information?

ok, I fully admit I am still waking up here, I just saw that you already did that

off to get another coffee!

Yes we tow occasionally with that exact combination, as our local trailer hire firm supply Bateson trailers. They are the only trailer that I know of that I would consider attaching to a CR-V because as you know the maximum towing weight is only 1500kg. I wouldn't try it with an Ifor or Rice trailer.

In theory it isn't ideal because with one horse you are close to the limit. However in practice it works quite well, the car tows with very little effort. We only ever do short local runs and drive at a snail's pace. If I have to go any distance I hire a lorry.

The new diesel CR-Vs I believe can tow 2000kg, so I would definitely look into that if you are buying a new one. Though if you were going to tow every weekend I wouldn't be getting a CR-V to be honest.

Thanks for all the replies- all valid points.

It would only be for occasional, local towing but good point re the weight of passengers or any extra equipment. I like the CR-V as the diesel gives better fuel consumption than I currently get, so cheaper to run than most 4x4s.

Can't stretch to the new model unfortunately- I had noticed it gives more towing weight but out of my reach at the moment

!
Looking at an 55-07reg.

Check out what the fully laden weight of the Batesen trailer is as this is the weight you need to add in not the weight of your horse.

So weight of vehicle plus manufacturers laden weight of trailer as should be stamped on trailer The two combined should not go over the limit.

Alternative if you only want to take a small horse - you could change the trailer for the Bateson Derby - this without the partition in is only 585k or 675 with the partition in. My 15.1 cob travels really well in it as does my mate's 15.3 - we have the partition out.

It is only rear load, but for me this is not a problem. Lovely little trailer and very light and easy to move by hand if you have to.

I was seriously considering a CRV but now we have Farra I am considering the transport as she is a 17 hand clydie and requires "serious" transport.

Diesel CR-V is a nice enough car. Wouldn't get the petrol - slower and less economical than the 2.2d. OH gets between 34 and 40 MPG doing vet type miles - country lanes etc. It is rubbish off road due to the lack of a locking diff or low range, so don't plan to tow into muddy car parks - you will need a tractor! Not sure about towing capacity though.

nooooooooooo way.

just because you're only towing occasionally is no reason to use an unsafe combination. there's no less chance of it overtaking you downhill because you only tow once every 2months instead of every day!
