I have my b+e license, my tow car has failed it's MOT and is uneconomical to repair, I have seen one of these locally to me which looks a good price and wondered what people's opinions are on it for towing and everyday use? Are they reliable? I only have a limited budget hence looking at something so elderly.

Or any other recommendations for a 4x4 that is quite cheap to buy but is reliable, I am obviously going to be looking at older ones!

My family used to tow with a Terracan. They rated it very highly as a towing machine, but I'm not sure it was especially economical on fuel. We use a Sante Fe. Not such a beast for towing (and check which model), but more economical for every-day use and lovely to drive.

Thank you. Would a santa fe be capable of towing two 15hh horses in an Ifor trailer? I know that my current car is rated for 3.5 tonnes and would like to stay as close to that as possible really!

Ours is, but some aren't so you'd need to check the specifics. We had a less meaty one before that was only legal for 1 + IF505, but we did do 2 in an emergency and it didn't struggle remotely, even on and off field. There's another smaller Hyundai 4x4 that isn't suitable, though we were once advised it was by a salesperson! Do your own homework, don't trust the seller.

Also look at a Kia Sorento. I have a 2006 model (3500kg tow weight). It is used daily to commute to and from work (circa 45 miles round trip) and it can tow my Ifor Williams 506 with 2x 15h horses (430-450kg each). Fuel economy 27mpg and road tax > £500 pa.
It failed its MOT a few weeks ago and was given a £1900 repair bill with new parts. Fortunately the garage was very good an sourced some second hand parts to get it through its MOT for £500. Still far cheaper than 10k to replace it with a newer model.
