I'm a bit of a 'lurker' on here and get loads of useful hints and tips, so hoping somebody may have experience of towing with a Mazda CX-5? I've got one to try for a few days but no towbar so can't sneakily hitch trailer up and try! It ticks all the right boxes so I could have it as my Company car and get rid of old Shogun (think its on its last legs). Only tow 1 horse, 16.1 TBX so weight shouldn't be an issue ...towing capacity of 2000kg and have a 511. However, it's the 2WD version, I only tow on roads and to venues with car parks so don't need 'off road' and probably only 6-10 times a year, but would be good to hear from anybody who has any experience? Thanks...early Easter eggs to one and all! 😄

Ooh interesting, I'm test driving one this weekend. There are different HP so some the higher will be more powerful, and auto won't be as good as petrol. They are rather nice though aren't they?! Be interested in whether they are up for job towing wise.

Oooh Bernster, hope you like it...mine was dropped off this morning and it's lovely, so hope it's up to towing! I've got the 2.2 Lux Diesel version, AWD would have been great but not so affordable when company car tax and mpg taken into account 😞

Hi, I passed my test in 1988 so think I'm a B+E?

yes you are B+E

All you really need to be concerned with is towing capacity so if you towing capacity is say 2000 then with a trailer weighing 1000 empty and a horse weighing 500 you will have 500 spare

For what you need a towing vehicle to do you cold get away with a basic family saloon with a towing capacity of 1600

Have just ordered one as next company car - arrives beginning of June. Have gone for 2.2 Diesel Sport.

I currently tow my IW505 + 16.2 TB with my current car - Mazda 6. It's coped brilliantly with power to spare - pulled us out of a VERY wet field at a ODE last year when everything else, including some 'proper' 4x4s at lorries were being towed. I just hope the CX-5 is half as good - which it should be as its rated to pull more and has more ground clearance.

This bodes well for me. Just got one and it is lovely (from what I can remember OH has stolen it and driven to Italy!!!)
Hoping to get towing when he returns. Already have a Mazda 3 which has been great too

So my 4x4 with a 2000kg towing capacity will tow a 505 with one 16'2 horse, a combined weight of 1550kg on a B+E licence and I wont be breaking any laws?

Thank you - I spent an eternity on the internet trying to check this only to find 2 distinctly differing answers to this on these very forums from over the years - it was very frustrating :D

That's why I joined this site and why This site set up the towing clinic sticky

Sorry maybe shouldn't be dragging up an old thread but looking at a 2014 Mazda CX-5 for towing 1 small horse. One is Awd the other not I don't really tow anywhere other than roads I had a Sorento previously I think I used 4Wd 3 times in total! Is the 2WD up to the job? Also do you still like the car? Many thanks
