As this has come third hand. The "star" letter has apparently come from a woman whose mare and foal were attacked by 2 staffordshire bull terriers. Her letter seems to be completely blaming the breed, not the idiot who owned them. I would be very interested to know what the letter said.

I have had staffies for years and introduced them to horses with no problems whatsoever. They have been no better or worse than any other dog (lab/JRT/cocker whatever) who have to be taught to respect and stay away from horses. Every staffie I have owned has been a fab yard dog and most have been able to come on out hacks - some flatly refused to and the couple I have now can't as they are too easily sidetracked by humans. Not of one has ever tried to attack a horse (or cows, obviously put them in the same category) because they were trained - once, not to. They happily meander with me through all the fields with youngstock, ponies and horses and stay well away.

I feel really sorry for the woman, and what an idiot the owner is (I think there was a clear request to keep dogs on the leads as well) but please, blame the idiot owner, not the breed. A friend's sister recently lost her (large and placid) dog to an attack by a lab and a friends lab ended up in the vets after being attacked by a St Bernard.

No she doesn't blame the breed at all. Just the stupid owner for not adhering to the keep dogs on lead signs and the fact they scarpered from the scene quickly and are unwilling to pay damages and the fact the police can't prosecute them.

There was no rant about the breed at all.

Thank you very much for putting my mind at rest. Much appreciated. I honestly do feel for the woman in question but do worry when staffies get pulled into even more poor repute.

I "think" that the police tend to care less when animals are attacked and not humans. I say that because when I have had friends whose dogs have been attacked (and killed), the police were not even interested in registering it.

Geniune staffie lovers, who are aware of the poor perception of the breed, will go a lot farther to ensure their dogs do absolutely nothing to be in any trouble at all. I could never let my dogs near sheep as they are not trained. I did try with a helpful Mr Ram but it wasn't successful.

I could cheerfully do that idiot a damage myself with his total lack of responsibility. Mind you, he is not much of a man if he ran away rather than then try to offer some help/payment for vets fees.
