Have switched from deep litter shavings to straw, as have moved to a new yard which supplies the straw and does not permit other bedding to be used. Quite glad about that as the price of shavings and other types of bedding is just SOOOO expensive at the moment and the straw from the new yard is really nice quality and well priced.

We've only only been there a couple of weeks but I am disgusted at how smelly my stable is (and me, after mucking out!)

I am doing a full clean out daily, and sweeping the floor clean before laying the straw back down and putting a thick layer of clean on top. I am doing this daily in the morning, just after the horse goes out for the day. No point in leaving the bed up as it's too damp and the floor doesn't dry during the day, plus I only have a limited time in the evenings to bring in, change rugs etc, so prefer to leave the stable ready for the evening.

The stable is smelling really strongly of ammonia, and I am taking out 2 good sized barrow loads of wet straw each day. I've not changed her diet and she's drinking normally, so could anyone recommend anything I can do to reduce the strong smell of ammonia apart from what I am already doing?

I should add that the stable is at the very end of an open barn, with 4.5 foot walls all round and plenty of ventilation. The bed is fresh each day, so I do not know why the ammonia smell is becoming so strong over night. It certainly wont be good for my horse's lungs breathing that smell in for hours on end.

If I were elsewhere I'd probably use a layer of absorbent bedding under the straw, but we're only permitted to use straw. So, what can I do to improve the smell of my straw bed....

Try something like stable zone - eliminates ammonia which is what you need rather than covering up the smell.

I agree, stablezone DOES make a difference.

I also found that used once a week Zoflora disinfectant is good too. Dilute it and brush out, rinse the area where she eats with clean water though as they aren't supposed to ingest it and this time of year the floors aren't drying. I used to brush it out in a "track" opposite the door, that way it's just a 2 foot area to rinse after.

at the yard we used to work out one mare was like this! and I used to reak when I got home and mum would threaten to hose me off outside! Ammonia smell comes from the urine not being soaked up but the straw. I used to use jeyes fluid once the bed was up and crub it clean. But you still smell yuk but the stable doesnt.

I have used Equidry - bit like a cat litter!

Also I have diluted disinfectant (cheap Asdas own) and brushed that over the wet floor - either do it daily or on the weekends. I can do it before I ride, leaving the bed up til afterwards and then letting it dry.

Straw is fab to muck out but a pain in terms of the smell.

You're not kidding! I stink each morning after mucking out and my OH is moaning about the smell permeating around the house from my clothes, hair and gillet (even though I take them straight off when I get in and have a thorough shower and always put my hair up under a hat to cover it).
YUK.

Mind you, how is it some people manage to visit the yard, do their horse and all the chores and leave looking immaculate? Me? I'm the one covered in mud splats, plastered in hay, with sweaty wet hair and reeking of horse urine. It's NOT a good image

Mind you, he often comes home in overalls reeking of calf poop, so I guess we're even. PLUS I don't make him wash MY smelling horse clothes!

I use Stable Zone powder, is what you use any cheaper and where do you get it. I buy the Stable Zone from Morgan Horse online pet supplies mail order - £33 for a 25Kg bag, plus £6 P&P.

We have moved yards recently and we have to be on straw now (I don’t mind it really..;. miss my shavings though!) and we use megazorb under the bed, and it helps with the smell - A LOT!!!
