My boy has been out of work for the last three weeks due to a muscle injury. Blood results came back high muscle enzymes. He is eating, drinking, walking and trotting no problems and only seems in pain when any pressure is applied on the left side of his belly. My vet has been out again today and says he is definately improving pain wise and has told me to slowly bring him back into work. Anyway my bill is £300 excluding today's visit and he has advised me to claim off my insurance, but I'm wondering if it's worth it if they will exclude kick injuries in the future? What do ppl think? Does anybody have any experience if using pet plan or for claiming for luck injuries on insurance? 😃

Pet Plan were great last year, easy and pleasant to deal with and paid out very quickly each time I put a claim form in.
If your horse has had treatment for an illness or injury from your vet, whether you claim or not, the affected part of your horse could be excluded from future claims anyway.

hi sorry to hear about your boy,im with pet plan and i find them very good,i have claimed for all sorts and they have been really helpfull and prompt, but be carefull as i think if the vet has seen your boy and it goes on record unless you claim within a yr for the prob they wouldnt pay out anyway.

even if you don't claim they will exclude it anyway as it will be on your veterinary history which you have to submit every time you make a claim.

Like others have said this treatment will be on your horses veterinary history so will be excluded anyway. So you might aswel claim and get most of your money back.

ditto this.
This happened with a friend and they even backdated claim to a date from the previous year when vet had checked a lameness on same leg.So yes claim.
Pet Plan have always paid out in past with no problems

It depends. Personally, as a former equine underwriter, if there was no long-term damage I would not have excluded a kick injury that was treated at such a low amount. if there had been tendon damage or a fracture or something then an exclusion is likely to apply. If you are insured for vets fees then i would claim to be honest. It is very unlikely the same thing will happen again but if your horse was to get a similar injury and you did then claim, the i insurer could delay your claim when they check the history and saw this incident on it as they make then want to ask a fe more questions or say you did not disclose a material fact.

In my mind, even a similar injury again would be unrelated and they would still pay (horses get kicked, it's a fact of horse life!) but it could just delay it a bit if you've not mentioned a previous injury.

Even IF they did exclude this injury it's sort of irrelevant as in the event of another incident your vet would only have to confirm it was unrelated to the previous injury and you'd be ok to claim.

you should let them know, claim or not as my mum had vet out once and didnt claim, when she had vet out again and claimed they asked for a full vet history then tried to refuse to pay out as she had not informed them of the non claimed incident!

As said, it's highly unlikely they would exclude 'kick injuries!'
I would probably claim for this. Pet plan have been good to me, though i have paid them plenty! I'm likely to start a claim very soon on a horse i've never claimed for.
They paid out for my dog a few years ago, she tried to slice off her stopper pad and needed stitching up. No exclusions applied. Then about a year later, she had another laceration injury to her big foot pad which ended up with a nasty infection and surgery to de bride a lot of dead flesh. They could have said 'hang on.... another laceration?' But they didn't, and paid up no prob. Thats why i still use them for my horses despite the fact they aint the cheapest.

My lad is with PP, and always has been. No problems paying out on his EMND years ago, but he was excluded for alt of things in relation to this .

Worked for them as well for many years, so have experience on how good they are from inside too :) - majority of equine side are dedicated horse lovers & owners - very unlikely they would exclude "kick injuries", but don't quote me on it, as I worked the Small Animal side :D

PP have been great with me. One of mine had a £2k claim for x rays and MRI's one year and then another £2k claim last year for an accidental injury.

I have been advised by them that the exclusions can be removed if the horse is checked over by a vet and no problem found. Whether this means a full vetting, I don't know, but they seemed quite helpful about getting exclusions removed. Seeing as we have now got all legs excluded, I will be getting the vet out to try and get this sorted soon!

As regards getting the claims paid - they were very quick, once my vet had actually given them the invoices and reports. It was my vet that held up the payments of the claim - which was daft really, as PP were paying them directly.

I use them, and they have been brilliant. They made claiming for my boy's cushings medication really easy and pay it directly to the vet. When he had a bout of colic a couple of years back we had a vet check him out a couple of months later who said that he was no more likely to get colic again so they lifted the exclusion.

I'll be definately claiming for this as further blood tests have come back inconclusive. After three weeks enzyme levels haven't gone down. I'd bringing him into light work and after 2 weeks if there is no improvement he has advised me that him may need an abdominal scan, camera and poss biopsies. So it could get expensive!! X

I'm with Petplan who were great last year when my horse fractured his leg. They paid out promptly for each claim - all of which added up to just short of £5k. They didn't question any of it and paid straight to my vet with no problems.

Strangely, I recently got my renewal and my premium has stayed the same - and they haven't had any exclusions on his leg!!!

I only have positive experiences with PP. Whether you claim or not, the history is on your horse so could hinder any further claims down the line.Choice is yours I suppose. Not really helpful - sorry.

Claim. My mare had a 'Oh we don't know how it happened' injury at stud to her shoulder, requiring stitches etc, they paid up and no exclusion as accidental damage!

question about them;

if you claim say now..... and the insurance is due for renewal in june.... does the claim only run until june (ongoing) or a year since impact/injury??

Pet plan have been brilliant for my boy. Had three claims now paid out quick and easy. He's excluded for them things now but wouldn't hesitate to claim as know he will only be excluded as they ask vets for a full history. When worked at a vets only company to never quibble.

thank you :)

do they generally pay livery fees for hospitalization too??

thanks :)

They pay the hospitalisation, but not livery fees of the hospital if that makes sense. Hospitlas ie Liphook (where my horse ended up with his EMND) separated the costs on the itemised bill, so that livery inc bedding could be excluded from the claim :)

Noddle: Also, I don't know if you are with PP but if so, have a look at the "Terms and Conditions" and it will advise you in there what is covered/not covered :)

I would recommed pet plan to every1 they were brill with me. I brought an ex harness racer of a dealer how had been in a driving accident. I had known the horse for a couple of months before i brought him. When it cam to having his jab the vet looked him over and saw hw had the start of a cateract. Over the years this got worse and he lost the sight in his eye. I never claimed for it as there wasnt any treatment but it went on his reccord. About 9 yrs later i went to the fild and he was stood with his tongue out like a dog! After 3 days stables and 8 weeks at Bristol vet hopsital and another month back home we had him put to sleep. A rare infecion had got into his eye socket and damaged to nearves to the side of his face and he was never going to get better(this was found out in the postmortem). Pet plan dealt with everything i just had to check the details on the form they even paid to have his body taken away..They didnt question the sate of his eye at all even thought the infection would have got in if it had been a fucntioning eye.

The hopsital were very good and ''hid'' most of the livery costs as nursing charges.

Then 6 months later my little rolley polley cob got cast (nothing new!) and the yard turned her out as she seem unijured and didnt tell me as it happend now and then! Then got a call at 5pm as i was on my way to the yard to saying she wasnt eating. When i got ther she had started to sweat and wasnt her self. Called the call out vet 6pm on a friday pain killer and antibiantic but could say what the matter was. Another vet out at 9 as she was colicing, this vet said couldn't rule out twited gut so a late night trip to britsal hospital was planned. Arrived at 2am and my coblet passed away just before 1pm while they were trying to stablise her for surgery. Her acids in her stomach had managed to get into her blood stream and it had raised her heart beat for so high for so long, it could cope and it stopped.

Pet plan paid for everything except the getting her to Britstol they even paid for her things to be sent back home!! They didnt question if i was a bad mum for loosing both horses in 6 months. They sent the forms helpped me fill them in and then paid. Would not use anybody else as they were helpful and understanding. they paid the hospitsal, vet and everyone else direct and put the lost claim in my bank and even rang to tel me it was there. If you need to claim!!!

Ps sorry for the long post.

have a rather large claim going in and a short stay (long on my pocket tho)! and was terrified of ringing them as i didnt want to hear it :D:D:D

they said livery is approx 35 a day + medical charges - am assuming the medical charges are covered on the insurance... (least i hope so)... i can deal with the 35 a day.

It will be excluded whether you claim or not. Anything on your horses medical history (even if it's just a conversation with your vet) will be excluded for 3 years - I was told this last year by Pet Plan and consequently do not bother insuring my horse any more. I'd rather be able to discuss my horse openly with my vet.
