Anyone been to stafford? Im going in march for the BE. I heard its a really nice course.also whens the best time to start training, and has any one got any tips to get going in this weather
I am going to the March event at Stafford, tbh in this weather there isnt much you can do other than indoor jumping and dressage practise. Are you doing any JAS? I am going to South View on Saturday, but will be a flying visit as I asked for an early time so I am first to go at 8.30 am!!!!
I've never been but Stafford is going to be my 1st event of the season, the reason I chose it is because I have been told its quite a 'kind' course so ideal for me and ponio to get our eye back in!!
Stafford is lovely, but with a short but very steep hill half way around, and too many horses (and riders) aren't fit enough for it. Lovely course though, well built and inviting.
Personally wouldn't go back to Stafford.
When I did it in 2006, the course was basically 25 different styles of logs - ok if you want a confidence giving round, but the only trouble being that it turns into a dressage competition
There is a pretty big & long hill near the end, but I seem to remember the time being pretty generous & loads of people were getting slapped wrists because they went 'too fast'!

Is changed alot since then. Is a lovely course, i went to last march one and fence judged in the later one. Theyve built a coffin tyope fence and a sunken road which caused probs, as did a couple of brightly painted angled roll tops. Beautifuully prepared ground, and really well thought out warm up areas.
It did used to be very 'loggy' but there is much more variety now, I 've been twice and really liked it (poss cuz I won my first rosette there!!). Don't tend to get many profeesionals so everyone is in with a chance!!
It's a really well run, friendly event, on superb old turf, that will only have been grazed by sheep. It's very well laid out, with plenty of warm up for all three phases, and the dressage is well out of the way of any distractions!
The cross country was a bit loggy in its first year, but there is a lot more variety now! As long as its not your first season, or you have previously done some cross country (successfully) you could possibly get away with not having cross country schooled beforehand, but you will have needed to have done some fast work and hill work as there is quite a steep hill half way around, and a long drag back to the finish. Don't make the mistake of using most of your petrol on the first half of the course!
I would recommend it - but then my mum is the secretary!
Good luck!
