Anyone been up Scafell Pike

...with dog?

My littlest brother (you know, the one who is taller than me at the age of 13) has been chosen to go to the international Scout Jamboree in Sweden next year - the slight catch being that he hasn't got a funded place so has to raise all the money himself... which is quite a lot!

So to help with this, he, mum, my step-dad, myself and Henry are all doing a sponsored walk up Scafell Pike at the end of summer:eek:

Has anyone done this with their dog? Any tips for us?
 
I haven't done it with a dog, but I'd be prepared to help Henry part of the way (when you're scrambling) and watch out for sore/cut pads. Plenty of fluffy white things to chase, so a long line would be the way forward.

Maybe research each of the possible routes because I would hazard a guess that at least one isn't ideal for dogs (or if you're scrambling with a lead in your hand).

I can always chuck him over my shoulder if needs be:D Wouldn't be the first time:rolleyes: He's quite good at hanging on.

I was planning on using his harness and police lead, as that will clip round my middle if needs be, leaving both hands free for scrambling! Or I could just hand it over to my step-dad:D

I was wondering about getting him a set of paw boots to chuck in my rucksack just in case?

I would think it probably isn't terribly dog friendly as I think it is a pretty hardcore walk/climb.:o

Much better that Henry comes and stays with The Moo:cool: and St Sweep and chases bunnies and squirrels all weekend.;):D:D:D

Plenty of people take dogs, have checked it out, and he's fitter than me - just want to take sure we have all the right stuff with us and are properly prepared:)

I'm told we're going up Win Hill to practice - am looking forward to that too, it's one of my favourite walks:) Look at that for a view! Can't wait!

I went up scafell pike when I was 10, no major memories other than one difficult bit on one of the routes where the scramble needed longer legs than me or my brother had. We were with an experienced group (of 60 somethings!) (who'd picked us up when we were deciding not to do Scafell Pike and helped us along).

Dog wise - my lab loved Snowdon, Cader Idris and Y Garn in Snowdonia. He's fitter and more surefooted than either of us, and was kept on a lead on the narrow/cliffy bits (which I was quite glad not to be able to see due to fog!)
 
My dogs have done Scafell Pike and Stickle Tarn as well as Helvellyn, Snowdon and several Munros in Scotland. Never on the lead but then mine don't run off and don't chase sheep. They find their own way and make it up the scrambles far easier that I do. Mine are both little lurchers. You will be amazed because there are always people trying to climb it in sandals, flip flops then those with all the full walking gear. it is beautiful in good weather and the view from the top are outstanding. Enjoy.
