Anyone bought a young warmblood from Europe?

If so, care to share your experience? I'm a total novice at buying from abroad, apart from TBs from France, but I'm looking into purchasing a couple of 3/4/5 year olds to be aimed at show jumping. Did you buy from a dealer, breeder, auction? And can you give me an idea of prices? I've had a couple of warmbloods whom I bought from a dealer based down the road from me. He's moved away and I though I might as well bite the bullet and cut out the middle man... Not that he's keen to share his sources with me unfortunately!

Sorry, all a tad vague but if you've anything to share then i'm all ears :)

Yes five :D

One at auction (but a small auction which no longer exists, I don't really like huge ones like Verden or Vechta as often the horses find the experience too stressful and never recover, then again I do know of people who have bought at those big auctions and have been extremely successful...and now prices are v.cheap).

The other 4 (well, two are foals, very recent purchases :) ) all came from breeders (3 different breeders...)

Prices - I can't help as mine were all dressage horses :)
 
Over the years I have had quite a few, as I worked in Belgium for 3 years I had some good contacts mainly breeders. I would definitly recommend you liase with Uk agent / dealer - worth paying a bit more if you are looking for something broken in and competing.
 
Her prices range from 2.500 euro to about 200,000 Euro so there is definately something for everyone. I imagine if you were buying a few she would do you a good deal.
 
Quite! I'm more than used to dealing with bloodstock agents and I'm confident I've picked some tricks and experience up along the way... Looking into a trip over to the Continent to some sales now and we shall see what happens. Rather excited :)

I've bought from a couple of dealers (one who I wont mention). I'd recomend Charlotte Foreman in Canterbury/Kent area i think her site is summerlees equestrian or something simelar. She advertises on horsemart also and often ads have videos.

You've probably heard of her, and my friend and I purchased an extremely unspoilt 4 year old kwpn from her.

Very reasonably priced(3k ish) , all her stock is but she's honest, she tells you how it is lol-and they're open to any vet/trainer- shes confident shes got nothing to hide. the 4 year olds are straight from the breeders I believe and she usually has them schooling round their first course at home to be sold.

Can't really fault the mare we bought. It had a good temp, it was sound, came with all papers just a blank canvass ready to school on and compete.. a nice horse! Clearly a dealer that is committed to her reputation.

As opposed to the few you get who just want to make a sale and couldn't care less if you went back or not!
 
I have bought a few, always gone over and tried them myself and never had a problem. If you know what you are doing you can get a good horse but remember that there are a lot of also rans as well :)
 
At the Verden Auction remember the add ons like VAT and commission. The Vet will be in the Auction hall and have the xrays and reports with him so if you miss your first horse you can always look at a second. Remember that horses are shown by professional young horse riders and they probably ride a young horse a lot better than you. Prices in Germany have held up very well during the recession the average price for a foal was 6885 euros.
