Anyone broken their ribs ?

whats totally obvious from the replies is that us horsey folk are tough as ole boots.

So as a summary to anyone else with broken ribs :

Don't laugh
Don't cough
Don't sneeze
Don't breathe
Stay away from others who are diseased
Take ibuprofen
Mad horsey people start to ride again, before they really should.
Mad horsey people only admit the above many months after they've healed properly!

I was told to leave it about 4 weeks but I had been working on my yard and riding in pain without realising for a week nearly before i couldn't breathe properly so got it looked at!I guess I didn't think that being headbutted by a horse and partially winded would do that ;) I was told to take it easy for at least two weeks but how could i with yard to look after and no cover!? I trust my mare to a good degree but only did a few small hacks and mucked out less, when the pain went down some more i got back to normal, silly I know.

Completely agree with this!
Oh and getting up from bed is one of the worst things to do at the time resulting in sleeping in various odd positions and waking up partners!

I broke 3 ribs, plus I had 3/5 cuts to my kidney and liver, a damaged lung and blood in my abdomen. Over a week in hospital, sent home with a lot of drugs and I was back on my sensible horse (who was doing tendon rehab) within 4 weeks. The young, potentially naughty ones were 6 weeks. I was told by lots of people it was too soon, but I managed

How could I forget the sleeping position ! Hubby has been banished to the other side of the bed way past the half way line !

Several times but cannot give any answer as I hda nothing to ride at any of the times. Just hope you feel better soon, I was in a lot of pain for about six weeks!

Yep, I did just before Christmas, tried to ride after 2 weeks and couldn't, at 4 weeks I taped them up with KT Tape and started riding again, only 3 times a week for 2 weeks and then everyday after that, kept taping them till 8 weeks.

Over 6 weeks for me to recover from non riding related rib injury. I had soft tissue damage and damaged sternum but no actual break. (Had X-ray's to confirm.... Would rather give birth again than suffer rib damage again x get well soon OP X and good luck horse shopping when you're ready x

Rode in a race two weeks after getting my ribs kicked in ,but back then there was no medical. Didnt even know that my heel was also broken till later on. Certainly didnt know that I still had serious after effects of concussion. Thank god the rules have changed to stop eeejits like me when I was young.

I broke 2 and bruised the rest when I was bucked off. I think I was out of action for about 4 weeks, but I heal up rather quick. Was still a tad tender for another 2/3 tho. Best part of it was I was bucked off the most slow doddly pony. Owner said it'd been the most he'd moved in years haha!

It took about 8 weeks before I rode again but I was still in pain...doctor gave me really good (but huge) pink pills that helped.
However I went for an X-ray a few weeks ago and the break showed up...I broke my ribs 20 years ago!!!

I really don't understand why people ride when they are recovering from an injury that requires a bit of rest to heal properly. None of us would take a horse for a hack with a splint or a broken pedal bone but we seem to think our bodies are different. Pain is our body's way of telling us to "slow down" and let it repair itself, when we have pain we use our body differently to try to minimise the pain, this compensation can make us stiff or crooked, not ideal for riding. I have a friend who sees it, almost as a badge of honour, that nothing stops her riding. When she broke her ankle, she ignored medical advice with the result that she doesn't have a good mend, she had her hip replaced, again didn't follow her doctor's advice and is now lopsided. Yes, there are certain injuries that you can continue to ride with but broken bones need time to heal. For goodness sake, look after your body as unfortunately when you get older these injuries come back to haunt you.

Don't get the hiccups.

And, never, ever start vomiting ............

For me, I was comfortable enough to ride a very quiet horse after about three weeks - but didn't because I hadn't slept more than about twenty minutes at a time in that last three weeks because of the pain when lying down! By that point I didn't trust myself to be entirely rational...

So I actually got back on after about five weeks, having been told four to six minimum. It was only one broken and two displaced, though.
