I've been looking at mobile stables, but it doesn't seem like I will be able to afford what I want before the bad weather sets in, so I am contemplating building some myself.

Has anyone else built their own stables? What design did you go with and how much did it cost in total?

I built my own but it was a good few yrs ago now so can't help with cost. My hubby is an engineer so I told him what I needed and he did the design. We built two 12 x 12 stables so made a frame out of 4x2 rough timber for each of the sides leaving gaps for the doors then attached the sides together. Then we put 3/4 inch plywood on the insides of the stable walls and tongue and groove boards on the outside. Hubby designed a pitched roof too although a slightly slanted flat roof would work too.

We even made our own doors.

I'm making it sound easy which it was but it was also time consuming and you defo need someone who understands basic building works although it isnt rocket science

I didn't build my own but did dismantle, transport, and re-erect one "free to remove". If you look through the free ads, you'll occasionally find them offered for nothing.

Mine turned out to be a bit more complicated than it need have been as it was down the bottom of a steep bank! I eventually got it out by dismantling it and pulling up up the bank with the ATV and a very long rope!

The full story is at http://www.morrichhighlandponies.co.uk/newprjects.htm. I re-built on concrete foundations but the stable was originally nailed down on railway sleepers which would be fine if you are not in a windy location. Being timber, repairing rotten or broken bits was easy.

BTW, I'm over 70 and did the whole job myself, so anyone can do it!
