Anyone claimed on insurance policy with E&L???

I did. They did try to wriggle out of paying for follow up treatment for a mare who tore a foreleg in a field accident. They then said my vet had told them my mare had behavioural issues (bollox!) but I did what Charleyace did and informed them every step of the way, took down the names of people I spoke to on the phone and fired off lots of angry letters. They did pay up in the end!!

Im recording my contact with them like crazy!!

Afraid I didnt take the name of the guy I spoke to but have recorded date and exact time. Also sent email versions ans "cc'd" myself in on them so I have a record. Filled in an online version of a query and an online request for a claim form (then I found you could download it!)

Rang the emergency number (i know it not a strict emergency!) but no answer (recorded times!) and ive also left a message.

I'll call first thing tomorrow and keep them fully up to date.

Thanks for all your help, its great to see everyone offering advice and stories. I truely appreciate it.

Hopefully my boy isnt seriously hurt.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow!

Hope it goes well Zola. I've got a negative story BUT I do know a colleague who had positive stories - she was very assertive and kept on at them, making sure everything is correct. You also need to let your vet know who you are dealing with, as if they are worth their salt they will make extra sure ever i is dotted and T is crossed.

Then once this is over get the heck away from them! They are often the cheapest to insure with, but the reason their leaflets drop out of every magazine is because 1) they have the money to because they don't pay out and 2) because they constantly need new customers because existing ones quickly move on!

My old horse was insured with them because they offered the cheapest veteran insurance. They paid out over £3000 in 3 years so I can't complain. If they try to wiggle out of paying just phone every day and cry hysterically down the phone (try to make it sound realistic!) that's what my mum did and it worked

Speak to them as soon as you can, the claims dept is open from 8am! They will still be a pain to deal with though, I've tried pleading, shouting, and just plain asking for the thousands they owe me and they just refuse point blank. it'll come eventually but what do i do in the meantime?
You could mention it to your vet, they might be happy to invoice you for payment. my horse went to Liphook and they refused to let her leave till they had received payment as I was insured with e & l. They didn't tell me this until I had driven 4 hours to drop her off for the surgery. Hope it all works out for you!

All the stories I hear are bad

My vet will ask you to pay up front on a credit card or put £50 surcharge on the bill as they have so many hassles getting money out of E&L that they won't take the risk. A friends horse had major colic surgery about 3 month ago, she changed insurance from E&L to NFU the day before - the luckiest move she ever made I think!!!

Hello I was with e and L with my boy when he had to have an operation at newmarket and they were really good. Ok they were a little slow, I got a red bill from the vet so called e and l and they paid it, not a problem. The bill was over £2500. although I didnt read the small print, because when it goes over a certain amount you have to pay 17 1/2 % of the bill. He then got kicked in the field and broke his leg and they paid for that treatment too. I had also heard horror stories about e and l so insured mare with seib, never had to claim with them. But I never had a problem with them. hope this helps

try and do any written communication by letter or fax (and keep a copy) emails can be tampered with and if it comes to a real argument they may say this...be careful

Good Luck

Hiya, Please don't panic, as with all insurance companies keep copies of everything, write down all phone convos to whom and when, keep them informed of what is going on, but i expect it will still take ages. I'm with them, havent yet claimed (nd am terriefied of doing so) but have rang them lots and lots and the SEEM very helpful.

We had a claim about 20 years ago with them as i was then only 15 my mum dealt with it all they paid out on vets fees (Xrays) and loss of use cos he had ring bone and could never be ridden again. It must of been fairly quick i never heard my mum complain and I know we got £800 for the loss of use cos mum said we could use it to buy me another horse! Oh how times have changed! But even though we had a straight forward claim I must of heard hundreds of horror stories about E&L, And ive lost count of the number of people that have said to us we are the only people they have heard that got paid. But i would not go with them again we are now with NFU.
