I dont mind clipping them when they have awful coats, but I used to cringe when I had to clip the lovely sleek ones. Same with any dog we had come in for clipping, my Boss was exactly the same. We had a stunning little cocker come in once, we put off clipping it for as long as we could, it's coat was gorgeous, but it grew back awful
I don't clip my three springy springers, but I recently started clipping some knots out of Molly's ears and got a bit carried away with the scissors......ended up completely trimming her ears.........they look embarrassingly awful! Actually feel ashamed of her in public and it's taking SOOOO long to grow back, too! Daughter reckons she looks like "an old lady's dog" (well, I suppose that fits my description!)
No, it seriously ruins their coats. The best thing you can do to help with the heat is give them a good trim around ears, belly and feathers on the legs. Then I use a pair of thinning scissors on the sides and chest just to take the weight off the coat without it affecting the regrowth.
I clip my springer and his coat grows back fine, he has a very soft coat and it comes back soft and silky. The worst bit is when the hair on his head grows back, he gets a spikey sticky up bit for a while but it soon grows out.
... Springers, Cocker and even Kensa my lab has a little trim up
!! I can't remember what grade, i'll have a look tonight but i do know its very short!!
They feel the heat as they're working all year round!! Altho atm with the weather here think i might have to buy them little doggy brollies lol never known rain like it
My springer's coat is fluffy and about 3 inches deep! I was told castrated dog's coats can go all fluffy and horrible, which his definitely does!
He is really bad in the heat - and has had fits from overheating so as soon as it warms up he gets clipped, he gets really excited when the clippers come out!
I used to used one of the plastic guards that come with most dog clippers but was brave this year and just went for it! lol
It looked better as he always ended up with tram lines when I used the extension guards and I had to do it every couple of weeks.
I left his tail and ears and sort of graded it up to those areas so it didn't look I had a naked dog with huge ears and a pompom tail!
I clip my Jerry Springer, I do it with an old pair of horse trimmers, I clip with the hair (not against like a horse) but I dont press on so it doesnt shave him too short or close.
I just do all under belly, all his feathers, up the back legs, what I call trousers, his ears and under his ears, chest. Not too much on his back, just so he looks smooth, no curls. He looks gorgeous when he has been done, he reminds me more of when he was a puppy.
