Am a bit old school when it comes to clipping so would never normally clip this late.
He's been off all winter and lOoks a right old mess. I'm doing a RC clinic with him on Sat and am considering clipping him.
If I do will I still get away with a hunter clip or will I have to do the lot? Also he's black so will he look dull for ages and will his summer coat come through ok??
Thanks

nope old school here too , taught never to clip horses after end Jan and I stick to this relentlessly. only heels and freezemarks clipped after this time.

1, exception i do have to clip donkey in summer as

a. she doesn't shed her coat quick enough
b, then if i don't her skin prob gets bad

I clip all year round, and they're show horses.

I clipped one last week, will do another next week. It doesn't stop their coat, it will just come through nicer and tidier. I clip everything off, legs as well. A hunter clip should be fine, but I'm not sure whether a trace/blanket would leave a line through the summer.

Clip all year round, you don't have to have a dull coated black horse after clipping him. Just give him a good wash with vinegar in warm water and he will shine.

clip away!!! saves going through the moult! either a hunter clip or a full clip.. you will be in summer coat in approx 2/ 3 weeks, depending on how much you rubber off the coat. they will still go through the moult but 5 to 10 mins vigourous rubbering a day will speed this up. the bonus is that they only shed clipper hair length.!!

Doing the old girl in morning :) she has cushings and will hold onto her polar bear coat most of the summer otherwise.
