Anyone clipped a strip of their horses mane to thin it?

Not deliberately no. If its anything like when people clip the sides of a tail because they think it makes it look like a pulled one, then I would strongly urge you NOT to do this... Seeing as its a cob, why don't you just hog the mane?

I did this once and it was a complete disaster!!!!!
Pony had a huge thick cresty neck and his mane was 3 inches wide at the roots. I parted the mane so some fell on one side and most fell on the other, then I took the clippers and cut 1 inch out down the centre of the whole length of his neck.
When I brushed it over it looked OK, but when I plaited it the bare bit was visible and looked terrible. After a few weeks he had a mohican sticking straight up which couldn't be contained in the plaits!!!
I ended up razoring the mane to about 2 inches long and pulling it to keep it thin.
Learned my lesson!!!!!

YES, works VERY well. Only do it on the UNDERSIDE of the mane, ie under the side which you want it to lie. Try 1/2inch first. Once done it needs be done regularly to keep it neat. It is much more humane than trying to pull a thick mane. I did it for years on a New Forest as I do not agree with pulling, he won very well in the show ring & no one ever noticed what had been done.

I wouldn't, if you don't want to pull, use a thinning rake, but be careful it is easy to get carried away.

No, I haven't. But unfortunately I did it by accident on the last horse I clipped when he moved suddenly just as I was clipping the line against the mane. :o

It grows back all spiky and takes an absolute age.

I've done it accidentally too, but only a mm width. Luckily it was the first clip and had grown out by plaitting season!

A thinning rake would thin any mane, thats what I'd go for.

We used to do the underside of my friends sec d. The mane was literally inches wide, even with an inch clipped off her mane was still thicker than the average welsh ds. It was so heavy that she sweated buckets under it even on a cool day when her neck was fully clipped before we took to clipping her mane.

That is my pet hate! In polo everyone does it, I think it looks awful! One of our ponies, bought this year, came like that, and he is going through the bog brush stage as we grow it out, it's all pricky and looks like he has a hedgehog on his bottom :(

we've done it on Tom's mane - though it's only a tiny bit - less than half an inch on the underside, and nothing on the other side. Pics on this thread!

He just has so much mane, and you can't pull it unless he's sedated, and even using a thinning comb makes him try to spread you against the wall!!
solo comb shortens it but doesn't get anywhere near the thickness of it!

Thanks guys - we have tried everything with this one pulling hasn't work she really won't tolerate it and it makes my fingers bleed - nothing could look worse than it does at the moment it's just so thick!!! My mum would kill me if I hogged her (her horse) and she honestly doesn't have a good enough neck to carry it off but it is awful to plai at the moment for dressage anything is worth a try so this could be an option - thanks
