My daughter rides a tubby Connie who up to now has been rug less in an attempt to lose some summer podge but he has grown quite hairy already and sweating up quite heavily with faster work and we have a hunter trial on Sunday where I know he will get v hot at so am thinking I am going to have to clip already. Anyone else finding the same? I

I clipped over 2 weeks ago to ensure mine would be comfortable for her first HT this season.
Even with a hunter clip she was dripping in sweat on saturday after doing a clear round XC as it was a lovely sunny day.
Clip when you feel yours needs to be done.

I have! My RID is a hairy beastie and the temperature in SE is very warm. I got loads of hair off in his first clip a week ago. Fortunately he is easy to clip so he gets done every few weeks. My TBx still has his summer coat though.

Thanks all - job done! It was actually very thick and the temp here is 19 degrees and sunny so turned him out naked. He was also chubbier than I thought under all that fur so will just pop a no fill on tonight and hope he burns a few more calories off and at least we can now work him harder without him getting to hot. Pleased I did it now!

Yep ... my highland is now sporting his "go faster" stripes ... I gave him a stylish looking chaser clip last Friday. Given that the weather is warm and sunny at the moment, I'm glad I did. He's still turned out in the day rugless and is perfectly comfortable. Looks like we'll be clipping three times this season.

Gosh I am lucky enough to have gone through only two clip with my horse in the whole eleven years I've had him - he's a WB and has a very fine coat. Keep meaning to sell my clippers! I know someone who has to clip their horse most of the year round or they end up itchy and heat up under their rug.

The first time I did clipped him I ended up with half a mug of hair! The time after that I ended up with slightly more - but not a lot more. Here he is with a clip and you can see how fine the clip is there's not much difference in coat length between the unclipped part and the clipped part:

I gave my cob a blanket clip yesterday. I believe she is part yeti so has been struggling with the recent very warm weather. I have a lesson tonight so will be interesting to see the difference in sweat!

Clip when you need to as well - I couldn't leave my poor girl any longer, she gets ridden 5-6 days a week and was ridiculously hot and sweating just walking/trotting out hacking so really not fair to leave her hairy!

Mine had a trace (with whole neck off), two and a half weeks ago but she needs doing again! I'm debating about doing the same clip or giving her a hunter but that would mean putting a 100g on at night which I'm not sure that I'm ready to do in September ;)

I'm holding off because I hate clipping, but the ID mare is fluffy it will be sooner rather than later :( Thankfully I don't need to clip the TB :)

Mine won't be done until mid-November neither my bank balance nor my sanity can deal with more than one clip and the required sedation every year!

NO and don't intend to for at least another month two wont be clipped at all

I clipped the first of the racehorses yesterday. Not a happy bunny! I normally defuse to clip before the 1st October but the mare was too hairy. I did a wee welsh pony 4-5weeks ago.

Clip away, especially if you are hunter trialling.

Just wondering if the reason why my horse felt very tired after 2 rounds of jumping yesterday is her heavyish coat? She didn't feel like herself at all! I keep being told not to clip till October (I know it's this week) was also told it shouldn't have made a difference yesterday..

TODAY :) I was avoiding starting until October but I'd got a day off work & we got quite sweaty out yesterday so off it came & wow, stood in the sunshine being hot clothed today he looked and felt dreamy, love a fresh clip :)

I am desperate to clip!! Pony has mega thick coat and sweats so much I can literally scrape it off, but she also lives out and I cannot justify clipping when its still sunny, ie: her coat can dry in the sun and she won't get cold. (Its only really cold at night in my area) Bring on the cold days I can't wait to get clipping!

Yep all off and will stay off! Hot hairy cob so don't think twice about clipping as he's in full work riding, driving and competing so no second thoughts about it!

Nope! Moved my horse to a warmer yard and he has not even started to throw a coat yet..he was naked yesterday and is in a very thin rug tonight (ok, am being smug!)

I'm fast heading toward second clip - I only did the first clip about three weeks ago as I had a fun ride to do and he would have melted had I not clipped him. Samuel is mainly Connie with a touch of ID so got VERY hairy VERY early, I got bundles of hair off of him. Already his saddle patch is starting to vanish where his coat is re-growing.

First clip is always the easiest, I'm dreading subsequent clips as the already clipped hair embeds itself in to just about everything more so than previously unclipped hair.

What with the gorgeous sunny weather even clipped he sweats ridiculously whilst working.

Luckily he's a dream to clip, I don't even have to tie him up, in fact, he was so grateful to be relieved of his itchy hair burden he was doing lots of wiggly lips thing you get when you scratch their itchy spots. Plus, he looks so elegant when he's fully clipped out (I take legs off too).

I'm on my second full clip..

First one was done around 3 weeks ago as she was getting too sweaty each time i rode and i had HT coming up.

Pretty much completely grew back within the three weeks so she was fully clipped again on sat as we have a ODE coming up this Sunday.

She is turned out 247 until the end of October and has a 100g on overnight then either naked or in a rainsheet during the day
