I did mine on Sunday after a nasty fall from my boy, and sadly I'm the worlds worst patient, hate feeling like a spare part around the yard and having to watch other people ride my horsey, was just wondering if any of you have done the same thing and how long was it before you could ride again and not be in constant agony?? I know we're all different but would just like a little clue hehe!! :)

Never done it myself but know of someone who got a hair line fracture of the coccyx end of may and it's now a dull ache from absolute agony.....

I did some damage to mine a good few years back. No x-ray so no conclusive evidence. I couldnt sit on my bum for longer than 10 mins for about 12 months, and had a lot of trouble sleeping.

Many years on I displayed the signs of Sciatica, but never sought medical treatment. :o

Since the incident ive had a hand sized patch on my bum that is completely numb. it causes me no pain, its just odd. :o

Thank you for your replies, it's so bad at times that I just dont know what to do with myself. My poor horse tried so hard to get over the jump, bless his heart, he did so well, at least he wasn't the one who got hurt!!!

Badly bruised mine years ago...still took about 3 months to feel anywhere near normal, and even then had to position myself carefully.:(

I did mine about 4 years ago.....It hurt like hell for about 6 weeks, but I dont suffer any ill effects now...(I had a bad back anyway!!)....I can suggest perching yourself on a thick book!!!

I broke mine falling downstairs when I landed on edge of stair and bounced and landed on it again twice more   :(

Took a couple of months before I could sit down without jumping up twice as fast and about 6 months before I could ignore the pain.

But then the very tip of my spine is pointing up towards my belly button instead of towards my feet

It's daft as the coccyx is just a tail bone, doesn't do anything, serve much purpose but hurts like hell when you damage it! It's only day 4 and I've had enough already!!

I did when I was 14, after a riding accident :( am now 27 and if I sit for long periods of time it still kills. Having said that riding is fine and it prob took about 6 months before I was riding again

Yep agreed but when I did mine *as said only bruised* agony feels like a electric shock going through your bod...4 days  expect a lot longer sorrreee :(

I've told you before Mrs Bouquet!!!!
YOU BROKE YOUR BUM!!!!
Normally I would say sit tight...but in this case!
My sister did it a few years back and found that she was more comfortable up and about but she suffered if she pushed herself too far.
Work out your boundaries first then as long as you are pain free go for it but tell yourself not to push to far!

I damaged mine years ago, couldnt sit for long and couldnt get up once I did sit down. I had to sit on a rubber ring for weeks, was the laughing stock at school. My doctor said back then that if it continued to caiuse problems it could be removed as it isnt needed.
Hope you better soon

I did mine over 10 years ago initially but after a good while it never gave me anymore problems. Until i fell off my horse and did it again! It happened a lot easier second time, took a lot longer to feel better again and six years on it makes a cracking noise if i move in a certain way, hurts after long periods of sitting or standing and it's lumpy!

I did!!!

I fell off a few years ago from a HUGE horse that jumped over the wings when I was meant to be doing a small cross pole. No body protector on and I heard a lot of my bones and neck crunch (not fun).

But I fractured my coccyx. Couldn't sit on a chair properly for a few weeks and during my exam period was not all that great! Doctor told me to stay away from riding for a while, but I borrowed someones safe horse and went hacking whilst slightly standing in the stirrups all the way round. Bloody knackering but did my legs good!

I broke mine years ago whilst sledging! Went over a snow ramp, parted company with the sledge then landed on the edge of the seat :o

Took years to heal properly. Couple of weeks of it affecting everything you do then just years of aching after sitting too long, which slowly reduced.

However it never really hurt much riding (after the initial couple of months) as you sit more on you seatbones than coccyx - it was sitting in chairs that hurt!

I did mine 6 years ago after a nasty fall (well a voluntary dismount lol) i couldn't sit down properly for a week! hospital recommended me a rubber ring to sit on and it did help, i wasn't back in the saddle for about 2 months and even then it was still painful, i hope your ok i know how you feel x

Hi, did mine 4 years ago and still hurts if I sit still too long. I got back on after about 3 weeks, walk and canter hurt the most so loads of trot. Big fluffy seat saver works well, still need to use one. Hope you are feeling better soon, I feel your pain.

I did mine about 10 years ago it was the most painfgul thing in my whole life! (worse than child birth!) I couldnot drive, sit down, walk or do anything basically. I fell off a surf board onto concrete very painful. Even now it still hurts when i sit for long periods! Took months to heal!

Did mine last Hallowe'en and it still hurts now!

I had a cortisone (sp?) injection into it in the spring... Made f-all difference! don't bother!!!

Still tried to keep riding but it was at least 3/4 months before it wasn't complete agony

Ooo yeah... also, invest in a cushion with a hole in it (meant to be for women to use after giving birth! or ppl with piles!) to sit on, makes a massive difference!!!

I did mine last year.

Yes... laugh away... I fell off a shetland :o :o :o

I agree, it hurt worse than childbirth.

I couldn't sit on the sofa, I had to roll in and out of bed (I couldn't sit up!), even sitting on a chair was painful. I recall having to call my OH home from work as I was stuck on a chair and needed the loo (two days after accident). And yes, the poor bloke did traipse home from work to come and sit me on the loo... :o

I found those spray on ibuprofen things worked well, they didn't stop the pain but they eased it enough for me to not scream in agony every time I accidently rolled over in bed.

I was okay after about two months though, and even rode a horse at the end of the two months.

A year on I get a bit achey but nowhere near the pain I was in. It's given me utter respect for anyone in constant pain.

I've done mine twice:( once as a child, fell down some concrete steps at school and once more about 5 years ago landing on my arse off a horse:D

For a good while I could not sit down for any length of time, especially in cinemas for some reason:confused:

Not a problem now though :)

Did mine for the second time about eight weeks ago - still very sore. I can confirm that coming off a broncing 16.2 onto the rock hard ground was not a good idea!

First time was five years ago and that took at least 12 weeks before I could ride again.

I cracked mine on the cross bar of my bike when I was about 13 (didn't ride horses in those days). Didn't think anything of it until I had my son 17 yrs later and he rebroke it on his way out.

Osteopath worked wonders and made sitting/walking possible, he actually made my coccyx mobile again as it had 'fused'. 2nd child arrived with no problems.

Still cannot sit on hard uncomfortable chairs for long, but no problems at all riding.

You may not feel like it, but a trip to a good osteopath might work as they may be able to provide more mobility by freeing up any muscles etc around the bone that may be adding to the discomfort.

I hope you mend soon, it was 6 weeks before I could sit properly after kid no 1.

Oh yes, twice in 2 weeks :(
First time I was jumping in the school, Jock decided to run out at the last minute and I sailed over his head and landed on the pole. Of to hospital in ambulance I go and find I've broken my coccyx, told not ot ride for at least 4 weeks.
2 weeks later BORED stupid pottering around the yard so think sod it, I know it hurts a bit, but if I put my seat saver on saddle that'll help, lets go for a gentle hack, tacked up, got on (gingerly!!!) of we go down drive to open the gate, now Jock being TB is bouncy at the best of times, but 'mummy' hasn't taken him out for 2 WEEKS, so we were really bouncy, as I leant over to open gate he shot through, my stirrup caught on the gate latch, leather didn't come of stirrup bar, so saddle shot round him with me still in it now upside down underneath him, still with stirrup attached to gate latch !
Mum was not best pleased when she gets a phone call saying I've just been put in another ambulance cause I've fallen off again, meets me at hospital where the news is I've re-broken coccyx, the look I got from her will last me a life time, no words were needed ! :D
That was 4 years ago, it still gives me grief now, moral of the story is: Doctor knows best !!!
