Anyone designed their own clip?

My pony is getting really fluffy now and starting to need a clip. He lives out 24/7 so I want the minimum of hair off, but his sweaty bits dont fall into the usual clipped areas.

Anyway, Id need to design a clip to suit him.

Anyone else designed their own? Any pictures of them?

I would do a bib clip and the sweaty bits will sweat less. If still too sweaty you could do a trace clip.

Took the neck out on my pony today and she is far less sweaty elsewhere too.

In answer to the title, yes my daughter designed one. I made the mistake of leaving her alone the first time she clipped :eek: My poor oldie

This is what he should have looked like which I find is just right for stopping excessive sweating but leaving enough to keep him warm, without removing all his front leg hair :D

Ha ha - a bib clip is good for horses turned out mostly. I thought I would try a blanket today - my lines were crap, so I went for the full hunter as normal - and just dug out lots and lots of rugs!
 
I used to have my TB clipped like a chaser style but his head was unclipped. The line went from in between under his cheeks under his jaw, throat, half way up to his mane and the line went down to his shoulder. Then once under the saddle, it went straight down just behind his girth and stopped there. So the clipped areas were throat, half his neck and shoulders, all his chest and between front legs and under his girth.

I think this is what I call an Irish clip. There are a few variations of clips on this website including an Irish clip:

I've done variations between the bib clip and the other one which I have always thought of as variation on Chaser clip. I don't like trace clips as bum gets unnecessarily cold and prefer more off neck. With bib clip I do add a small clipped patch under girth area as easier to keep clean and dry there for riding.
 
Don't know if its a "real" clip or not, but I take off all the neck & then run down from kind of near withers to point of back legs if you get what I mean?! Basically, his belly & all his front end is clipped, except legs & head. (All the bits he let's you clip without sedation :D)
 
Sort of.... my boy had a full clip last year except his belly was left on, granted that was coz he goes mental if you try to clip his belly but was deffo different to most clips lol :D
 
I run a clipping service and often tweek all the traditional clips a bit to suit each individual horse, more commonly the chaser clip as a few horses have needed all the neck off and none off the quarters.

how many of you clip the legs off when giving a full clip?

my mare's just been done and due to lack of time i paid one of the grooms to do it at the yard and oops - legs have come off.!

Not really bothered, and we hadn't discussed it pre clipping but i usually the leave the legs on hunters so there's a bit of hair for protection from thorns, hitting fences and other small cuts..

legs on or off, what are your preferences?
 
Natz88, I do the exact same clip, except I left his head on and my line is a bit more straight up and down (by accident / avoiding tickly bits) so he basically looks like a block of neapolitan ice cream :D
 
Lula- I always leave legs on unless someone says otherwise.
I've done/do a few funky clips. One is an aged shettie with cushings, he has little waterproofing in his coat, but sweats even without a rug. He has basically the area a combo rug covers off, but stomach left on as he lives out. Enables him not to freeze when it rains, nor sweat when its mild. That's a winter only clip. Did a horse at owners request, everything else off, except hair from canons down. Actually looked quite cute, like he had leg warmers on. And one horse that usually had a blanket was clipped by vet for stitches on his quarters. Owner asked me to put matching stripes all the way through. Last year daughters pony sported the 'half done' clip, when the extension lead broke & I didn't get chance to finish for a week. Made more wierd because I'd done leg lines, either side of mane & tail, head & under stomach while she was standing still.
 
I do a cross between a neck/belly and a chaser, so from ears to 4/5 inchs above front legs and stopping just after where the girth goes.
My advice is to experiment to find out what works for your particular horse, do a bit less than you think first time round, you can always take a bit more off next clip! (but you can't stick it back on !!)

That looks really smart. He lives out so dont want to take that much off.

He only tends to sweat on the sides of his neck, maybe I should give him some go faster stripes down his neck! Ha ha xx
 
Lula - i leave legs on from mid/end oct - january any other time i take the legs off as she lives out so just for extra warmth! but i clip below her knees all through the summer as she grows very hairy legs all year round thankfully she has even white socks up to her knees and hocks so i just hide the clip line into the line between white and black so you never notice if we have a big show in the winter i will clip down to the knees they'll look good for a week or so then its usually back in!

i do something between a hunter and a ful i take all ears face and body off except a bit under her saddle, legs left on as above - shes looking rather odd at the moment her saddle patch is a deep mahogony red, her legs are orange and fluffy and her coat is a very dark grey almost black with alot of roaning in it and she has orange patches around her eyes!!
 
I am hoping to let him live out this year. We normaly bring ours in, but me & mum are determind to leave them out this year :p. If I was you I would do a high trace you don't take as much as I do off.
