Anyone drive a doublecab pickup?

Looking for some opinions really. I'm going to change my car later this year as sick to death of not being able to get to my horses field in my golf, and also the whole car being totally filthy the whole time because of the bl**dy dog being covered in mud!! Even if he stays in the boot (which is a bit of a tight fit anyway for my 8 stone rottie!) mud seems to migrate onto the back seat

Anyway, what with that and the constant irritation of going to the feedstore and realising the feed will have to go on the front seat as the dog is in the boot and its a 3 door so can't get it in the back seats

I have come to the conclusion that a doublecab pickup would be a sensible option. Husband has a posh 4 door car, so would possibly go for the one of the ones that has 2 doors on cab and a smaller backseat, as don't need to take 4 people that often. Will possibly ultimately want to tow with it as well as our horsebox is really an unneccessary expense these day with only one horse competing regularly, so when she eventually goes to the scrapyard in the sky we probably won't replace her, plus it would be very handy to be able to pick up trailerloads of hay from the barn at my parent's house without takig the lorry over!!
Anyway, options that have been suggested are the mitsubishi l200, the nissan navara and the toyota hilux
Anyone got one of these? Any recommendations or experiences?

my dad had the L200 had awful steering on it could never get it around corners as the turning circle was very tight. he knows has the nissan navara (aventura model) it is fantastic for towing really good turning on it. he also has had the carryboy put on back so it looks like a 4x4 really. AND it is automatic so i love towing with it.
 
Interesting, thanks captain. I lease my cars as it is done through work (luckily!) so I will get a brand new one of whatever I had, and I have to say I prefer the look of the navara to the new mitsubishi! Thats the back I'd want too to put the dog in, so thanks for info!!
 
Well B has a Navara and his son has a Mitsubishi warrier (l200) and the Navara has a larger petrol tank and is better for towing with. He uses it for everything! Would say the Navara is best of the two though the Warrier is more flashy looking.
 
if you are going to buy the carry boy buy it on internet we saved thousands. get the accessories brochure from nissan dealer then google tem. they fit it for you
 
go for a ranger... they are the cheapest ones you can get, and p**s all over the others off road! (well def against a navara)
 
Hmmm, what about on road wench? I hadn't thought of a ranger, thats the ford isn't it? In terms of off road, I'd be going up a muddy track a few times a week, and the towing accross fields at show eventually I guess.....would the navara not cope with that?
 
yes the navara would... but the ford is better off road, and they are far cheaper (esp 2nd hand). Both about same on road, just like driving a big car.
 
Son had a L200 double cab; I'm so glad it was written off!
As said before, the turning lock on them is appalling especially made worse if you were towing, it was comfy inside and not bad to drive as a car though to be fair, it just felt like a tank! It also had dead spots where you'd put your foot down, say at a junction and nothing would happen for a while and then you could shoot off; didn't like that feeling of vulnerability at all. The load space wasn't over generous and remember if you don't get a top for it, you'll need to lock everything in the vehicle anyway. It also wouldn't go anywhere near what our Daihatsu would go through so doesn't really like getting its feet dirty! Son now has a Terrano which we haven't been able to have a crab about at all yet!

No, a manual. As I say, it was easy and quite nice to drive, just had those worries with it.
 
I have the Navarra - tried the Ranger, the toyota , the mitsubuishi and settled on the Nissan. I didn't like the Ranger as it was not as comfortable for driving and felt really tinny. The toyota was un impressive. The Mitsu was nice but drove like a tank and had the turning circle of one and then I tried the Navarra and was hooked.res. In deep mud no 4X4 works as well as the old Landys because they have the narrower tyres but I would never buy a Landy becasue I hate the level of discomfort on long distances. However I have towed with my Navarra in all conditions and I can honestly say I have never got stuck. I have towed a large H510 with two large hunters in it and have got through every thing.
 
I'm thinking of doing the same thing as my Disco could do with 5 doors and is getting a bit old! OH is a builder so the pick-up would be useful for him.

I've been told - L200s drink diesel and have been known to be gutless and have the turning circle of the QE2!

Nissan Navaras tow wonderfully and are better on diesel, but the engines have a tendency to blow up!

Toyota Hi-lux 3Ls (170bhp) are fab but to avoid the 2.5L 100bhp, although the 2.5L 130bhp is ok.

My farrier says he's saved £3500 in diesel moving from the L200 to the hi-lux!!!!

I have something against Fords so can't have a Ranger!

At the moment the 3L hi-lux (39mpg extra-urban) is winning!
 
I have one of the new shape Mitsubishi L200's. It's the animal model. So I have full leather interior, satnav etc.

I have to say that I love it. It's automatic and so easy to tow with - usually 2 large ponies in an Ifor 505.

The back is great for chucking my two dogs in (GSD & Rottie). And great for loading feed etc - so no mud int he car (well apart from my boots).

Haven't had a problem with turning circle - guess if it's tight then you just have to learn to reverse LOL!

We chose the Mitsubishi (amongst other things) because of the styling - it's modern and up to date - the others all look the same.
