Can someone tell me please if these go behind or in front of the shaft loops on the harness please? Not had a cart with these on the shafts before and can’t decide if the purpose is to stop it rolling back or forward. Sit right in line with the loops. Thanks

Thanks very much. If it goes behind the loops how does it stop the shafts sliding back though?
Sorry maybe me reading it wrong. I’d of thought if it was behind the loops the shafts could slide back but not forward to the front of the horse?

Behind, stops from sliding back.

Sorry I get what you mean now. I’m a visual learner ?. My old trap never had them so wasn’t sure where I should have them as they are so close to the loops not far enough behind or forward to be self explanatory. Will hitch him up tomorrow and give it a try. Thanks very much for the help.

It's part of your braking system, although your breeching should be engaging at the same time. The cart running onto the pony from behind (say, going downhill), pushes these against tugs, which push the weight of the cart onto the saddle, which is held back by the crupper.

By loops do you mean the tugs? You just slide the shafts into the tugs with the tug stops behind.
Yes I do mean the tugs. My other cart never had these just the loops for the breeching to stop the cart sliding forward. I suspected this was what these were for on the shafts but didn’t want to look a fool putting them the wrong side ?

So I’ve upgraded to extra breaks ?

Sorry, meant that the tug stop on the shaft is behind the harness tug - as per Merry Equimas pic :)

As the others have said, it’s to stop your shaft sliding too far forward, reduces pressure on breeching but be careful if the pony hasn’t had similar- it can pull the belly band forward and rub the pony- keep an eye on it.
the traces being the right length stop the shaft from sliding back ??

Yes my other cart didn’t have them so will keep a eye and make sure it doesn’t cause him any rubbing. I have soft fleece pads for his harness so hopefully not but you never can say.
