The 28 year old fit and well horse that I have been exercising for my friend has managed to get a thorn embedded in his eye

The Vet came tonight and we were able to see the thorn floating in white fluid at the bottom of the eye, however it is now ‘sealed‘ in.

The Vet’s main concern is glaucoma as he feels that the eye is slightly bigger?? .. And if the pressure builds up he will be in pain, but fortunately at the moment, the horse is not bothered at all, and all he wants is food, which sadly is most probably how he managed to get the damned thorn in there in the first place!

He is on Bute, antibiotics, and 2 lots of eye drops, one of which is a Steroid. The idea being that he is being treated topically and systemically, and the Vet feels with this treatment, he is confident that the eye will settle down and that he will not need to have the eye removed.

Over this weekend if the iris does not open, which is what one of the drops are treating, then he will not gain the sight in the eye.

Has anyone else experienced this with their horse and what was the outcome?

Thank you to anyone who responds.

Hiya
It is Punch the Dun Suffolk Punch X, don't know if you really knew him, Sarah owns him ... she has a Gelderlander as well, who is magnificent. P is such a lovely chap and he is a true School Master .... he would get anyone home in one piece and I would guarantee that he could give anyone their confidence back ... I love him to bits .... after Motor of course

I had a horse a few years ago who had this, but unfortunately lost sight in his eye. Don't be too alarmed though as he operated perfectly without it and in fact got even more clear rounds than before! Hope your guy makes a full recovery.

My boy did this with blackthorn, Had to have the top surface of his eyeball scrapped with a scalpel blade to remove the thorn and the ulcerated cells (without sedation he was so well behaved!). He had a scared cornea but this caused no problems and now (some 6 years on) there is no sign of it ever having happened. He was on antibiotic drops and atropine to dilate the pupil so that if there was excessive swelling it didn't cause his cornea to get trapped on the inside (if you get what I mean). Good, thorough care now should hopefully see it healing well.

Good luck,

Sqip

Hi Sqip

I am so glad your horse is ok as it is such a worry isn't it!

Thanks for the advise, and of course what I meant in my post was the pupil needs to open up again (duh!!)... so the medicine your chap was on is that same as this chap. Goodness me you were lucky he came through that, with it being blackthorn as that's horrid stuff. I asked the Vet whether this was blackthorn but he thought not, as it was too big .... I thought blackthorn was big tho

This is eerie as I PM'd you about your Avatar as it looked a bit like the horse I am talking about, how surreal

He is getting the best care from his owner and the Vet and I try and help as much as I can
