My horse stopped eating her normal soaked hay and Timothy haylage a few weeks ago. Since then I have bought different types of haylage which she eats for a while and then refuses to eat it. I’m running out of ones available to try. She is eating her hard food and some grass chop but I’m struggling with forage.

I have been worrying about her but a couple of other people have told me that their horses are the same. Maybe something to do with the dry weather last year or she only wants grass. Anybody else experiencing the same? If so I would interested in what part of the country you are to see if it’s regional.

I’m struggling with my gelding who isn’t usually fussy but he has been flatly refusing to touch most of the bales of hay delivered. I get directly from my yard and surrounding feed shops have the same supply. I’ve had to throw so much away.
Lots if not most of the horses on my yard have been refusing this years hay. We’re based in Essex and I’m having to feed him haylage so he gets his forage. But with the cost of literally every bill I have gone up it’s a real struggle. It’s been causing me a lot of stress and worry this year.

I feel your pain but good to know I’m not alone. I’m North Cambs but a similar part of the country.

Not mine but friends mare yes, noticeably. She has recovered her appetite now with this hideous cold snap though!

Mine is eating everything in front of her as usual but she is being a bit less polite about asking for a nibble of the verge!

Yes! I currently have 3 round bales and 2 round haylage in my barn and they initially turned their noses up at all of them. They've now decided that the haylage is just about edible, but the hay is a hard no. They are natives too, so fussiness isn't something I'm used to. I can only think that the challenging growing conditions of last year have affected the taste of it. They loved Mole Valley high fibre haylage, but that's not ideal as there's 3 mouths to feed.
