My friend and I were called cruel today...


for putting our horses in the field in the rain

I did far worse than that - I made him do some schooling before he went out to feed his face!!!! He was trying to be clever and thought 'if I do this all really quickly I'll get to the field quicker'.

Wrong!!!! Ha ha ha - I AM Cruella de Ville!!!!!!!

And it is raining here (again) and he hasn't got a rug on.

We live in Scotland and my horse is out all summer, day and night, in the pouring rain and wind. If she had opposable thumbs and a mobile she'd be calling the ILPH on my ass

Gosh that's not cruel... I think I am cruel for keeping mine in and sedating her!! Our field is flat though and is starting to not drain so they will have to stay in today and go out again tonight. Generally they stay out in all weathers without rugs. I've been to work this morning and the whole yard is staying in (going on walker instead) but again, there are so few fields and many of them don't drain well so they will just have to lump it.
Far more "cruel" to keep them in IMO thatn to chuck them out!
 
mines in, dartmoor is awash and flooded everywhere, and he hates the rain just fence walks till he comes in, so whats the point. plus the fields are so water logged, and i am trying to keep them resembling summer fields not winter trash paddocks
 
And I would just like to add that he was only in last night as BBC weather said it was going to be vile last night - even OH said to get him in

Predictably the whole farm is bone dry - can they not get the weather right??? Just once???!!!!!

I am cruel - but in a different way - as I live at least 45 minutes from the pony, knowing that it was going to be pissing it down all day, I got someone to put her lightweight on yesterday, when it was 21 and sunny. But at least she is dry now!
 
I too, am an evil parent. My horse now lives out. He only wears a rug in storms

:) And yesterday I didn't even go to see him as it's my day off, so he just got fed by someone else and abandoned in the field after our arguement on monday over showjumping speed! Today im going to drag him in from the field (he's beginning to look a little feral) and do some dressage! Poor, poor pony.
 
GNER - better give them my number too as my poor, elderly, one eyed ned was out in the rain all last night! Rain sheet, granted, but still..... Also, my poor rescued gypsy cob is out STARK NAKED in all this rain! If I put a rain sheet on her her temperature rises to about the melting point of steel! I did think about trying to tie an umbrella to each of their forelocks but didn't want to show the other owners up! NB - my neds spend their winters out too so I expect to be in jail by tea time!
 
mine are out with their LW rugs on and have been all week but i think todays rain will make the fields too wet for turnout tomorrow, just hope they dont trash it today otherwise YO wont be happy
 
Oh Stilton, what pampered beasties...next thing you will be saying that there is 'shelter in the field'! I much prefer to know that my mare is a stand alone lightning conductor (not an ounce of protection in the field, which I am a bit sad about but ho hum...)
 
Mine is out 24/7 unrugged, as is the 23yo of a friend. They won't melt and it's not cold. Hopefully it will keep some of the fat off them and reduce the problems that come with overweight horses. There are some on our yard that have rugged their native cobs, ffs! One of which is quite fat and could do with using a bit of energy to keep warm. No need to rug most horses in this weather, they are designed to live outside, and it's much more cruel to keep in for no reason or put a rug on them so they boil.
 
Pad is field kept 24/7 all year. No rug on atm as its supposed to be summer! Hmm I do feel slightly guilty today tho but at least he has a nice big shelter.
 
Yes they are pampered beasties but they have absolutely no shelter not even hedges and i know if i didnt rug them well in this weather they will just stand and shiver! I would rather have them out eating and warm than cold and standing doing nothing

I also have the luxury of working funny hours so i can be around at various times of the day in case it stops and then i will take rugs off.

I am cruel as well, although he does have a rain sheet on! I may even ride later, although if it carries on like this I'm not sure I'll bother - typical on my day off!
 
I'm annoyed, I took Tia's rug off last night because it was nice DRY evening and woke up to the rain

i have a non-horsey friend who i think thinks me mean cos we have no radiaters in the stables!!!!!!

Stilton, mine is in a middleweight too!! I have no shelter either. Her little fatty companion man friend is nekked tho.
 
Mine is out in a medium weight too. He's a wimpy warmblood with minimal shelter in the field. It was either that or bring him in, and I didn't have time to sort his stable out this morning.

RE: radiators in the stable - when I worked on a big yard in the USA, the stables were air conditioned and centrally heated. But it did get down to -20 in winter and +40 in summer......
