Anyone else at a yard where no-one rides?

I too am on a yard where no one else rides (well only one other but she rides in the day during the week and afternoons on weekend - I ride evening in the week and morning mostly at the weekend). A friend comes to meet me approximately every other week when possible so most of the time ride on my own.

Just bought transport too so if you mean Cannock Chase PM me as i am not that far away really.

I would not use a livery yard facilities being a happy hacker so rent my own land, I rarely ride out in company as people just either let you down and don,t turn up or they are late leaving me waiting in the allocated place with a bored horse.

I used to be scared hacking out alone fearing something would happen and I would not cope alone, but after a few solo rides have learnt I can cope alone. I can also choose the pace and lengh of my rides if I feel like doing just a 20 min hack or a 2 hour hack it,s my choice.

Maybe these people just need a bit of reasurance that you wont go faster than they can cope with, I know I used to come up with excuses not to ride out with others incase they were much better than me and wanted some speed sections. I know I would not hold my mare together galloping in company.

I,m not saying this might be your problem I,m a walk along type with a few trots and the odd canter up an hill type. But a girl who I asked if she wanted some company out hacking let me down, and I later found out off a friend it was because she thought I might want to do more than she could cope with, which is really funny as I am a slow and steady happy hacker.

There's a yard over the valley from me, and most of the owners there barely seem to ride. When I rented a field right over the stream from them I could hear dogs barking and kids screaming, but barely a ride amongst them.

Through the trees I watched a teenager ride her pony half way across the field whereupon it turned round and bolted back to the gate - end of the ride (I don't blame her!!)

There's also a friendly couple down the road, but they won't hack with me 'because threes a crowd'.

It's a bit sad really.

So glad, therefore that I have wheels, as I box all over the place to ride with friends who keep their horses further afield.

I hate it when everyone at a yard is like that! When i kept mine at college, everyone there was always to busy *schooling* to go out for a hack. only a few people went out! and that was just down the road and back! People used to comment about how long id hack out for! I used to go for hours! I think people these days take it all way to seriously, I feel sorry for the horses being subjected to four lengths of fencing and going around in circles every day...

I am the only regular rider at my yard now (there wasa 17 year old girl but her mare was pronounced in foal a week ago to give birth in about 2 weeks :) ) Iam on a riding school yard so the horses are worked but generally not by their owners. Mine does the occasional lesson but he is really a bit feisty for most people so I have to ride . I enjoy competing so I ride to bring him on as they are both ex racers they need to work otherwise they do stupid things :) I try and hack alone mostly as if he gets too used to going out with company he is an absolute a**shole when he then goes out alone. My 3 year old hacks out alone and in company and does odd little bits in the school (15 -20 mins) . I will probably ride 6 times a week and my older horse will work 5/6 times a week and my younger one will do twice with a rider and once a week lunging, free schooling etc.

We keep our horses at home, so often ride alone or with sister, also ride with friends and neighbours, BUT I am very selective who I ride with, some people have so little road sense, always canter in the same places etc etc that I choose to ride on my own rather than with them and their often bad mannered horses :)

We are a mixed age group at our yard, about half of us over 40 and then other half are in the 20-30 age group. The older crew including myself are the ones who seem to enjoy hacking out - we have some great hacking on the doorstep. The younger ones do seem to ride less or go in the school but some of it is they come up at different times when they might not have anyone to hack out with. Some of the horses at our yard are not great at being out hacking by themselves. I am also selective about who I ride with as are some other people on the yard.

I've been at my current yard for a yar now and have never seen some of the people ride! There are 18 of us and only 4 of us(including me) ride very regularly during the week and about 2 more ride at the weekend! It's shocking, on of the girls there is a bit spoilt and has a fantastic 12.2 with lots of ability etc who she never comes down to see! It baffles me, I mean fair enough if you work full-time etc but why have a horse if it's going to be wasted!

I have seen this question asked often on this forum. In my opinion, surely it is up to the owners if they want to ride or not? They pay the same amount of livery and as long as the horse is being looked after and is happy, then why should it matter? Maybe some owners have horses that thay can't ride for whatever reason, but again it is their choice. Maybe they work hard so they can have a horse, but its up to them.

I am out of action due to a medical condition that is stopping me ride and I'm finding it difficult not being able to ride. Being asked daily if I am riding would only make me feel worse.

Maybe it's time to stop being judgemental and focus on enjoying your horse.

I don't think being judgemental is what this thread is about... Rather, why do people have horses, paying a fortune for them (and in many cases having two or three inc youngsters), but don't ride or seem to get any pleasure out of being with them. Often to the detriment of the horses (esp youngsters).

A forum is for discussion, surely ? A lot of threads atm are "judgemental" on people just discussing things, often tongue in cheek. Very tiring.

I'm a nervous wreck to hack out with and have nobody to hack out with either (own private yard and brother has slowly given up due to full time work), so the only option is for me to go out alone which to someone who has never lost their confidence would seem like eating cake. Its really not so simple. I ride most days in the spring and autumn and pretty much every day in the summer. I ride in the field or school, show scary objects etc. I started to go up the road but my pony is only young and hasn't been out on a road as busy as mine. I also hate when horse's jog home, as I got bolted off with when I tried a horse that was 200% in traffic.
So with nobody to go with (he bucks when he gets excited with new horses (nappiness! :()) I have to try gently to build my confidence up to go hacking. It's harder than people think! Don't get me wrong I do love hacking my brothers older mare but she knows I'm nervous and therefore wont go too far until she stops and gently takes me home.

However the part about people not riding their horses even when the horse is in good health/they have the time to ride I agree that its a bit silly but so long as the horse is happy thats all that matters.

QR - I'm on a big yard - approx 36 horses - but half of these don't seem to be ridden at all, and the other half tend to stick to the indoor school.

Having spoken to numerous liveries most of them are really nervous about hacking, some with good reason, some not. I'm told that they watch me leaving the yard for a solo hack full of envy - but I've tried to persuade them to venture out with me but with no luck so far.

I think its a real shame but I love my yard, and my mare is an excellent hack by herself so we go out regularly. I'd still love to have some company though and hope I can convert a few of the other liveries some day.
