Been ringing round to get lorry booked in for pre-MOT and test, one guy told me I would have to pay £150 to have it steam cleaned before they could test it! I have booked it into C and R Day now and they didn't mention it .

I must admit ive just had a premot done and while they didnt say it was essential, part of the cost was to steamclean the underneath, along with all the work that needs doing amounts to £1200!! Horses are MONEYPITS!!!

Yes they are

and I'm expecting a big bill as its a B reg Renault Dodge and last year it sailed through with nothing needing to be done

I've only got a little 3.5ton lorry, but I just had it serviced and MOT'd £200 total.

Came back as dirty as it went, so definately wasn't steam cleaned.

I have taken my lorry to be tested the last 7 years and never steam cleaned it. I got it cleaned once and it cost me about £30, but that was a while ago.

Personally I would just take it to be tested myself and then get fixed anything it fails on, its a lot cheaper that way and at least you know it honestly needs fixing.

sounds odd to me had my old 7.5 tonne Leyland for 5 years and never once been steam cleaned!!! Got a very good trustworthy mechanic and even though had serious battery issues this year plus a couple new tyres, some welding and other bits and bobs it came in at just over £500 inc VAT and test and also spending 45 mins trying to get it started at the yard and then driving it to the workshop!!!

Great plan if you know one end of a screwdriver from the other!!!!

Why do you need to know one end of a screwdriver from the other? You take it to the test centre, all you got to do is drive it thru a barn (OK over a scary pit) you get to the end of the barn and they say yes or No - that's it. If its failed on something minor you flutter your eyelids at the driver in the lorry next to you and he'll fix it for you and if it is something else you drive home show your test sheet to your mechanic and ask him to fix it.

VOSA aren't a comercial garage and try very hard to pass a lorry as they make no money out of failing it - its nothing like the corrupted world of car MOTs.

Also my lorry has had a slow oil leak for about 9 years and it's never failed on that either, but it also wouldn't be the cleanest lorry in the world

We always take our own and just power wash underneath before it goes.
I hate driving over the pit thing and make a joke of it, the examiners then are more pleasant and although I'm sure I don't get any favours once they allowed me to whizz off and find a new diesel cap before passing it.
I don't think steam cleaning is necessary, just reasonably clean should do.
Oh and beware of pre plate checks, our local swindler (sorry garage) once charged me £1100 for ours. After that I would rather do a basic check myself and if it fails, get the stuff done and pay for a re-test.

My friends run a horse transport business, so their lorry is inspected and serviced every six (I think) weeks or so. They have to have it steam cleaned every time, although to be fair to them they are carrying very valuable animals and are scrupulous about cleaning between loads, so I'm sure there can't be much to steam clean off in their case

Sorry thought to said fix any probs yourself!!!!!

(although was quite impressed). My mechanical skills extend to fuel, oil and water!!!

Anyhow way to scary for me, thus hand lorry to friendly mechanic to service and take to test for me!!!

If a lorry fails on something and you can get it fixed and retested the same day it is a free retest, if it is fixed within 24 hours its £10 and then within 14 working days about £30, after that you have to have it retested.

I was told that mine had to be clean underneath and tidy in the cab but they don't care about the inside of the box.

I pressure washed mine underneath last year and they were fine with that.

Thanks, think they were trying it on. Henryhorn - have checked charges - £45.00 per hour for pre-check and they said it should take 2 hours.

Although old, ours has very nice living and Molly travels very well in it. If it passes its MOT may be upgrading so if you fancy a trip over
