SO i fell off a young horse and broke both bones in my lower left leg.. I got an IM rod (sometimes called a nail) put into my shin bone which is held in by 4 skrews. (the rod in put down thru the middle of the bone)
HAS anybody else had this injury?? if so how long was it before u could walk? drive? and get back in the saddle.. Doctors have been very vague so far on recovery time but one said around 4 months and another said i should be running again in 3 months?? :(

Poor you, probably the worst time of year for it to happen too! Not exactly the same but my OH has metal put into his leg after a drunken stunt went wrong :p to be fair he was on his back for quite a few months but was back at work after six I believe (he's a builder). I think it all depends on your recovery rate, how quickly you heal and how much soft tissue damage there is. Bones heal fairly quickly but the area around it is the b***r. Fingers crossed that all goes well in recovery. Personally I would say at least six months from seeing other peoples experiences. Having said that one guy I knew shattered his pelvis and ad his hip pinned and was back riding after three months but he suffers with constant pain because he didn't really wait long enough. Fingers crossed x

thanks.. i just wish i had a time frame put on it.. im bored out of my tree already and it will only be a week 2mro! :)

I got chucked off my 16.2 IDx a few yeas ago now. He then proceeded to stand on my leg and smash my femur, patella and mash up my growth plate. I was 16 at the time and was told I would be lucky to walk wihout a limp or ride again. Had to have 4 hours worth of surgery. I was told I'd be in cast for 12 weeks. 4 weeks later I had to have my cast changed as where I'd lost so much muscle it was spinning round. Had it re x-rayed and was sent home without a cast! That was on the Wednesday, I did a 3ft open on the Sunday (on the same horse that chucked me!) and then cycled to my physio the next day... I was sickeningly fit at 16 though, as in ran 3 miles to the yard with the dog of a morning, chucked out mine and my sisters pony and mucked out, ran 3 miles home and then went to school, did the 3 mile run again after school and rode and then would either run home or get a lift if I was lucky. I tried to run 4 miles Saturday and thought my heat was going to explode running up the orchard hill, I wish I had the same guts still now. Too many kids in the school and I go for a hack instead and panic if people watch me ride!! Don't put a time frame on it. Just keep up with your physio and set yourself achievable tasks each week. Mine was top of my leg, so not sure how that shows with time scale for you? And I did mine in the March (just beofre all my exams back then as well!) - wire coat hanger undone is great for scratching the itchy bits down your cast. Out of interest what age bracket are you in Fonax - as that definitely affects it. Get well soon!

I did my tibial plateau and I was off for nearly five months. I had plates put in to sort the stability in my knee but 18 months later, I'm still not back to where I was before. I've only just started running again.

I was naughty and got back in the saddle after three and a half months but it was more like five before I could ride properly and even think about jumping.

im 24 next month and quiet small not over weight or anything.. there is no cast on it as they want me to move my ankle and knee and put some weight on it already.

Sounds like you're doing well already then! HHO online shoudl keep you occupied in the mean time :) And there's a site called Coursera that occasionally does some horsey courses. I did their equine nutrition one in January. They do loads of topics that aren't just horsey so that can give you something to do in the mean time as well :)

i wonder why they are always so very vague, i imagine because no two people are alike, and they have to be cautious incase they get sued.
I had a simple break of my leg, so cant give any advice, but i am now going to visit my gp for at least basic info about my fractured pelvis. hoping i can start driving again pretty soon. i wish you all the best.
