Anyone else bring their horses in out of the heat today?

It was 32 at noon at our yard today and the GD's field doesn't have any significant shelter . . . so I made the decision to put his bed back down, bring him in, hose him off and let him escape from the heat in his stable for the rest of the afternoon. Judging by a) the neatness of his bed; b) the fullness of his haynet; and c) the emptiness of his water bucket when I went back up at five this evening, he had a good loooong drink and went right to sleep.

Anyone else bring in today?

P

P.S. And, yes, this is a totally pointless post ;)

I did yesterday as it was blazing sunshine and it's nice and cool in the stable. I didn't bother today though as it was cloudy here and a bit cooler than yesterday. Much nicer weather for being outside!

Yes. She's much happier in the stable and munching on hay where she's not being tormented by bots and horseflies. :)

Yes, after brining Harry in last night and finding him covered in dried sweat I decided he could have a few hours out early this morning, then back home for farrier and turned him out in his paddock here which has three lovely big trees to shade under, he chose to stand right by the back door in the shade snoozing all day, then ive just taken him down about an hour ago, will leave him out all night now

I wanted to but the wooden stables were hotter than the field. Bringing her in tomorrow for a hose off as udders were covered in white sweat today.

This :) Although I didn't bring mine in yesterday except to ride. He's got natural shelter in the field and is wearing a fly rug so he shouldn't be too bothered.

I didn't bring them in but did give them all a long afternoon shower complete with shampoo & carrots, both yesterday and today! The boys have natural shelter to stand under, mare has a lovely big field shelter to shelter in but doesn't seem to understand the concept - goes in there first thing in the morning for a few hours when it's cool, after demanding to be let out of her stable, then at about 11 goes to stand in the middle of the field away from walls/trees looking hot for the rest of the day  - but she doesn't "do" changes in routine and gets so worked up if I try to suggest she comes in for a break, so just have to keep showering her down instead (sigh!)

Mine comes in every day. There's no natural shelter in the field and he needs to come in and have a munch, chill out and sleep!

Yes, they went out on a long hack from 7am til 12 then were kept in through the hottest hours of the day and went out about 4 45- they drank lots of water, didn't eat a great deal and had a snooze in the cool stables! I am getting up at silly hours to exercise them in the cooler temperatures, it is lovely and cold at 5 or 6 am!

Mine just have a shelter, and all 3 times when I went in today..9 am, 12.30 and 5pm I found them in there :D

They come out and graze for a while then go back in when the flies get too much.
Nice to see them in there as I worry that they just stand out in the sun all day but theyre obviously being sensible :)

Just home from the yard - car was reading 28 degrees at 8pm!
Mine have a lovely small shady paddock for daytimes with a double sized shelter in it - Tiny Fuzzy has been spotted sleeping foal like in it at lunchtime, with Big Fuzzy standing guard over her :D
Its too long to be in for them on my work days from 6am till 7pm, so this is the next best thing.
Their night paddock is much larger (but very bare!) and also has a shelter in - Big Fuzzy went straight into it when I popped them in that paddock tonight

No way! The stable block on our yard is horrendously hot. My two, plus their mate are out in a lovely paddock with lots of shade and a large, self filling water trough in the shade. Check them once a day, plus other liveries come and go and keep an eye out for each other. All are out for the duration of this week in this heat as well. Wish I had the luxury of checking at lunchtime and bringing in etc, but work 60 plus hours a week full time and am on DIY livery. Oh gawd, am in NL and have admitted I am not a perfect horse owner.......... Sorry guys.

Well, I'm bad too! Mine are always out, they have nice trees and a shelter to go into, they never use the shelter though, they much prefer the trees. The stable is baking, so I certainly wouldn't want to be using it! Sure, we only have the one stable for emergencies, but even at my old yard, they stayed out.

I can understand people bringing in out the heat if there is no shelter at all, but it's much nicer surely, out in the fresh air?

Wish GD's field had shelter . . . or I'd have left him out . . . plus if he'd been in his old stable, which frankly behaves like an oven in weather like this, I'd also have left him out . . . but his new stable is shady and cool and it just seemed to make sense to bring him, b/c I could.

FWIW, I didn't check him at lunchtime . . . I was still at the yard at lunchtime b/c I was doing something for YO and another livery . . . and my original post wasn't intended as a slight to those who left their horses out/aren't up the yard - merely an innocent question about who else caved and brought theirs in. You might need to grow a thicker skin ;).

And, yes, I'm on DIY too.

Yes I brought mine in, they haven't had time to get used to this heat and there isn't really enough shelter in the fields with grazing. I also wanted to give them a break from the flies - all back out tonight and will be in again tomorrow morning if as hot.

Oh me too . . . if he'd been in his old stable he'd have stayed out - that stable turns into an oven . . . but it was much cooler in his new stable than in his field and he has no shelter in that half of the field (we divide and rotate the fields and our three are in the no tree side). Walking from the field (no breeze, baking sun) into his stable the temp must have dropped a good five degrees). Plus, I felt he could do with a break from the flies . . . yes, fly rugs/masks/sprays work, but all three of ours were still plagued . . . so I brought him in to give him a cooler, pest-free environment for a bit.

Good news is that here in the soft south, it's supposed to be a full 10 degrees cooler tomorrow . . . GD will be out for the duration.

Bloody hell, my tongue was well and truly in my cheek. As a long time CR regular, my forays into NL are few and far between, however, its reputation does go well before it lets just say. Personally It worries me not a jot what people do with their horses as long as there is no abuse or cruelty, plus mine have to fit into my lifestyle, which they both seem to be pretty well, with my daughters help as well.

No offence intended OP, and for what its worth, my skin is pretty thick. If you knew what I did for a job you would understand that pretty well.

To be honest I wish I didnt work the hours I do, at a place of work nearly an hour away from my horses and impossible to get back to at lunchtime etc.

I suppose the materials of the stable would make a difference too, seen many stables with tin roofs, over-baked ponies!

I always bring her in summer time.

She eats, sleeps and is ridden then she goes out for the night. She only needs a day bed and seems to appreciate coming in as she's out of the sun in the cool and away from the flies. She's also off the grass of course and is available to me all day, so tbh although it's not for everyone, it kind of suits the both of us.
