I try to poo pick daily. I have 2 horses,a 17h KWPN and an 18month old Knab/Appy filly.
They live out 24/7 and the grazing is good , long meadow grass.
I started counting the droppings to relieve the boredom I guess and because I was sure they were doing more than I remember reading in an old BHS manual. 'The average horse will do around 8 droppings a day.'
Well mine are well above average, between them producing in on average 30 dollups a day!
I am guessing the warmblood produces mounds that weigh 3lb,and the filly 2lb. Thats 150lb a day,Thats 10 stone of poo, more than my body weight!

On a serious note;this rather anal habit of counting does mean I know when I am not feeding enough forage in the winter.........So I have to deliver my body weight in hay and then clear up my body weight in hay. This certainly makes me glad I don't leave poo picking til the weekend. and have to shift 70 stone of dung.

I count as well.

Mine does 12 overnight (he is out from about 5 pm to 7 am) and 4 or 5 during the day - in the stable.

I can't remember how many he does when I turn round to the winter routine.

I do too how sad eh :( but it does mean I can judge if I have missed any or whether I can skive the far corners of the 5 acres I walk twice daily! :)

Soooo glad that there are others out there that count poo too - thought I was just sad/a bit mental!!! My OH thinks I am!! My 2 do approx 30 between them daily as well - so glad they are 'normal' too.

I am obsessed with them for my KWPN lad but only because he colics around this time of year. I honestly don't think I could get any more fibre into him! My lad is able to 3/4 fill a wheelbarrow so not sure how much that weighs.

I'm even sadder in that I get totally frustrated if I lose count in the field! I sometimes forget how many I picked in the previous patch, it is mind numbingly therapeutic in a strange way though.

i poo pick daily too, while i dont count them i seem to know if the barrow looks right, and can save myself from walking the whole paddock for nothing. :).

I only count them in the summer when he is on very restricted grazing and I worry he hasn't enough to eat...the poo always shows he gets plenty even though it looks like a completely bare paddock!

Praise be !! I thought that was only me who did that... not that I ever admit it... my old yard knew I counted as I'd tell them how many I collected A TB x + my Irish cob = 70 per week in the summer 45 or so in the winter.... My cob does THE biggest poo's - one fills a scoop, literally, so she only does 3-4 per day out grazing and 4-5 whilst stabled...

Sad, but I think its such a straightforward way of knowing how their guts are.

My OH thinks us horsey set are well wierd for being obsessed with poo !

Another counter here! I count them to make sure he is not getting too much grass in the day...as part of his laminitis prevention. My lad does between 6 and 8 in the day and about 5 ish in his stable at night. If he starts to do more than 8 in the day I restrict his grazing a bit more.

Ha yes I too am a counter! Oh, so glad to see that I'm not in minority of 1. I pooh-pick the ponies' field daily (two ponies) and take out 24 - 26.

They are on extremely restricted starvation patch grazing..... but if anyone were to suggest to me that they're starving I can safely say there's enough grass growing there to produce one wheelbarrow full of muck a day!

I'm obsessed with counting. Especially with the one on starvation that I do for my yo's though I found her with diaheara yesterday and she now has suspected salmonela

can I join the poo counting club too!!??!?! I think it also depends on the horse too. My little Welsh A pony used do a lot less number of poos as my cob (obviously a lot less in volume too!) even though he was on the same grazing. Welsh and mare about 24 poos. Cob and mare about 30!

I think I have OCD about poo picking - it HAS to be done everyday and it has be done before the chickens are let out otherwise they kick it everywhere and I cant get every last scrap up.

On a more sane note I think it is very useful to keep an eye on their poo - I can tell if there has been a flush of grass, I can tell the difference if they have been more hay/ straw than grass. Its also 'interesting' to see from the positioning of the poos what direction the wind / rain was coming from and where the horses sheltered.

God I need to get a life!!

I can't because my horse likes to have all his poos in one (huge) neat pile, whether he is in his stable or the field... Looks like an elephant has been in there, not a horse :)

Well, there I was thinking that I was alone in my poo counting obsession!! Loved looking at the calculations though...it has all been taken to a new level...thanks!!

I want this horse!! The only time I get the pleasure of a toilet pile is when my little 10hh pony is on his starve patch and he conserves the grass.

Yes, I count them too.

1. So I can tell when I've just about got the lot

2. It tells you if something is amiss with one of the horses

3. My current lovely liveries and I have a wonderful arrangement whereby I feed, water, hay and rug their horses as needed, on a daily basis, but they do all the poo-picking, including mine - and they are brilliant at it. But I've had not so good ones in the past, and it gave them a shock to be told that on the basis of 15 x poo a day, and them not having poo-picked for a week, they had got 105 to clear up!

Little things please little minds....

Not quite so nice when he's stabled and it's cold and he uses it as a lovely warm pillow  :D He also wees in a bucket on command though which is useful :)
