Anyone else depressed with the thought of winter?

The cold is fine, the boggy field and mud I can cope with, the winter hacking I actually like, but the DARK! I hate how early it is! Even at 3 o'clock today it was pretty grey and not very good visibility. At least I am fortunate enough to be able to ride in the daytime (when I am not injured and have a saddle!). I don't know how I'd cope if I worked 9-5!

I like winter because it means hunting, log fires, and roast dinners.

However because we have had such a wet summer, just don't feel we have had a break from the rubbish weather, and hate to see my lovely green fields being reduced to a mud pit.

I find I can stay positive until the New year, but really struggle to get through Jan and Feb, and find it hard to justify having horses at that time of year...

I hate winter mostly. I like clipped ponies in cosy rugs, and cold crisp mornings. I hate the wind, rain and snow, I hate mud and I loathe riding after school in the dark. Seeing my ponies head over the stable door makes it all worth it though.

Well I spent another dark evening by myself :( to make matters worse my stable is dark and some of the barn lights weren't working,, everything is so much more hard work in the dark. :(

Thanks for all your replies on the whole I'm glad I'm not the only one this time of year depresses :( roll on spring!

I used to love autumn when I didn't have horses because of the lovely colours, now it depresses me at the prospect of six months of cold and mud.

This year it is worse as we didn't have the big bonfire party we usually have, which usually cheers me up, I've ended up clipping and bringing in earlier, and the whole farm is sodden and damp!

I had to get up very early the other morning (2am) and had to scrape my windscreen for the first time this winter.

Oh I had forgotten about scraping ice off the cars :( damn it! I'm usually ok till Xmas, as I don't mind autumn and there's Halloween and fireworks night (we usually have a party) then crimbo but this year seems so much worse :( I think it may be down to the fact that last year I didn't even have my loan horse so had the winter off!

C'mon - think positive :D

Only around 15 weeks before its getting light a bit more again :)
Mine went out 24/7 again in Feb this year as it was so dry! (but back in again at night in April when we had the deluges of rain )

It won't be long before people are groaning about grass-fat fuzzies, mozzies, flies & heat etc again :D

:)

I like your thinking, im trying :) lol

Yes I'd take that groaning over winter groaning! Hehe

I don't like it, but all mine live out, and are currently just on grass - other than checking they're sound and happy I don't have to do anything with them, three are youngsters, and the old boy would probably like more hacking, but hey, it's dark! I can cope with any amount of rain over ice and minus temperatures, and last year I took Vit D3 to keep my happiness levels up, and that worked very well, just started it again when the clocks went back. I don't enjoy December much, flat out working, then Christmas, New Year, year end stock check (already stressing about that!), then by the time you're back to normal at work you're already a couple of weeks past the shortest day, and there's light at the end of tunnel!

I do struggle with April and May though, by then I really think I'm due 70 degree temps and balmy evenings, but I'm still in long johns and wellies!

I've noticed quite a lot of people seem fed up of winter already and we've only just put the clocks back. I don't like winter and I'd happily hibernate until end March/early April if I could :D

I try to use winter to get jobs in the house done, things that I don't do in summer because I prefer being up at stables, out in garden or out with OH and friends.

I made a list of jubs last week and will try and get one or two done each week. Boring things like:
Sorting wardrobes and personal paperwork
Cleaning cupboards etc etc
I actually cook in winter making 'comfort' meals for us and dad so he can have meals ready in freezer.
I also make jewellery and tend to make more in winter because I spend more time in the house

I love the snow although really don't like the rain :(

Oh well soon be Christmas :D

I love winter, would rather snow anyday than days of rain and mud.I cant win thought I complain in really hot weather that I cant wait for winter, and in winter on the odd days when my fingers and toes fall off I moan and cant wait for summer.BUT I still prefer snow...:)

I love winter! No flies / horses generally in and clipped - so I can just go to the stable and jump on (often in the dark....don't care)
I love the routine - so good for youngsters - they know just where they are, they come in at a certain time etc.
Hard work - but rewarding - nothing better than evening stables at 5pm on a winters evening, horses in, chomping at feed and hay, lovely warm stables - all checked over for weight, condition, legs etc. Wonderful!

On the plus side, winter gives me the chance to over use my slow cooker again! There is nothing better than getting home at night to cooked food that you can just eat straight away with the log burner blazing...I have a wonderful curry slow simmering for 9 hours currently....yummmmmmm!
