I have a fantastic 15"3hh WB, she is 22 but doesn't act or look it. She has been there & got the T shirt but still loves jumping, she is fit & ready to go, but thats where it stops, we get to hack out & school at home but there are no shows within hacking distance, apart from one riding clud which won't let over 19's compete :(. I saved up for a Landrover freelander to be able to tow but now can't afford a trailer. I have borrowed my friends rice but its old & heavy & really not big enough horse wasn't entirely happy in it. So frustrating when you go past all these yards & see lines of trailers parked up not being used. I am on a yard by myself so nobody else to catch a lift with either!

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhh, I don't want to go to badminton only want to be able to pop around a clear round or do some x country schooling she is 22 after all. I am trying not to sound selfish as I no there are many of you out there thinking at least you have your own horse etc..... Just know she has so much fun jumping & would love to let her spend her days doing things we both love.

I feel the same, I've got 6! but no box, it would be nice to be able to take them to a few shows without having to worry about them playing up, at least you got sone were to stick them.

I know how you feel, its so frustrating, my boy isnt really great at travelling because we just dont do it enough also when he gets to competition his generally too het up to do anything worth while and we have awefull rounds. I would to be able to take him somewhere every weekend even if i just did a clear round every time because then maybe he wouldnt find it all so exciting because he would be used to it

Ditto this, luckily a friend has space for my boy for an upcoming show but I'd love to get him out more and not have to depend on others. I feel your frustration *hugs*

Yes! I too am without transport. I would dearly love to try endurance with my Arab but sadly have no means of getting him to any of the rides, as they are too far to hack to. I can't afford to get a new vehicle to tow with, so I know what you feel like!

Well I have 3 altogether but the other two are my retired 1st & 3rd ponies. I am sure they would like a little trip out to a little in hand veteran class, instaed of being stuck in the field or pottering around the block.

My field is an OAP home for horse but I have been offered several youngsters to bring on, but whats the point if I can't take them anywhere to give them experience, plus I would get attached & want to keep them & then their talents will be wasting schooling & hacking!:(

I feel your pain! Got a horse who is raring to go but no transport! Not from a horsey family so 'mummy' hasn't got the kit to tow my horse for me either.

I have recently made it my aim to save up for a 4x4 and trailer and take my test! It'll be expensive but then at least i'll be set up for good!

Keep saving for that trailer now you've got your freelander! Do you need to take the B+E test as well? i.e. did you pass after 1997? You can get quite a good deal on a 2nd hand trailer and they don't depreciate very quickly if you get a good model. There are loads of them going at the moment.

Chin up, we just gotta work a little bit harder than those who were given all their horsey stuff on a plate....;)

If you are willing to put the work into it, you can pick up an older trailer for a few hundred pounds, however, you will need to find out your weights as the freelander's towing capacity is not more than an estate car.

When I was in the same situation as you I managed to find my first box for about £200. In my case the repairs cost in the region of £150 as we did them ourselves and I had a roadworthy trailer for peanuts.

Yes, wish I'd never sold my trailer, only sold it because it would of been on the small side for Mack, but would suited the little mare down the ground, but of course back then, I didnt have her.

Every horse should be sold with its own trailer :D ...''comes with full tack, rugs and a Bateson'' :D

I am very lucky my boss put me through my B + E test as I needed it for work.

I can get away with a light trailer, like an I for williams, with an aluminium floor, result MEGA money even 2nd hand!

LOVE this, we should start a campaign for it!:D

There are other things you could do you know (at least you have a horse that is rideable, lots of people don't).

Why not try interdressage? That is a dressage competition that you do by videoing yourself.

You could rent a trailer or lorry occasionally and go to a couple of shows a year that way.

You could see whether there are any hunt meets within hacking distance

You could see whether you can rent a xc/sj/wh course somewhere nearby to practice on.

You could see whether there are any clinics that are within hacking distance

You could put up an advert at your local tack shop and some of these yards where you see all the boxes parked up asking whether anyone would let you hitch a lift with them if you cover the expenses (you can't offer payment legally but you can pay petrol costs and buy them a thank you bottle of wine or do a favour for them)

If you really have no shows for miles you could try to set up a riding club.

Hope some of that is useful to you

Well I used to be but I run an ancient 50mpg+ car and saved up for a lorry I paid £1K for. Problem solved.

Ooooh I feel your pain too!

I'm 40 now and have never had any transport - things always conspiring against me on the money front....I've got a wonderful show horse who I'm desparate to get to some county shows, but have no way of getting there. Only have an estate car so no way can hire a trailer, and hiring a box is mega-bucks......:(

Struggling to save as OH was out of work after being made redundant, then got a job, but the company are in trouble and aren't paying anyone! So I'm trying to run the household on my wage and every penny is taken up....:(

She's tied up again now and is on box rest anyway so I've calmed down a bit, but earlier this year it was really starting to stress me out....

Currently saving up for a horsebox. Decided I would like the option to take a friend along and luckily having passed my test pre 1997 can go over 3.5T. So saving hard and on the lookout for something cheap and cheerful.

I have had my trailer and Landcruiser since 2004, in that time, I have spent more time going back and forth to various vets and vet hospitals. I would sell the trailer but I have more vets visits to go yet :(.

I had my first horse for 17 years, apart from vaccs and teeth, he wasn't seen by the vet for 13 years. My other 2 since then have certainly made up for his rude good health.

We are sending a trailer to a collect farm machinery sale tomorrow which I expect will fetch around £200. It is quite old but in reasonable condition, although could do with some repainting. It is a rear unload, but that has the advantage of being able to tack up inside the trailer if it is raining. The lights work, the hitch is in good condition and there are 2 newish tyres on. The ramp was replaced a few years ago too. It was a double pony trailer and then the roof was made higher to fit in my 16 hh TB hunter. I have travelled many happy miles with that trailer and although the horses had to travel diagonally they all travelled very well in it. So there are some bargains around.

I know its really annoying, im dependant on my friend as she has a lorry.
I will get a 4x4 soon so i can buy a trailer.... my OH has promised, we just need the family car 1st.

I am fed up looking for cheaoish lorry. want a shortish 7.5 ton for 16.3 with room for living andcan go up to £5k but dont want it breaking down every 5 mins. anyone know of anything let me know. dont care if wants work.

I would love transport but as I only share my horse it would be silly to get any. But I would love to go to shows but hitching a ride with anyone is quite difficult as he is 17hh and quite head shy with low roofs/door frames. I would hire a box but that would cost an awful lot for just one horse going to very small shows..

unless you are out every single week hiring a nice safe trailer is probably cheaper than keeping your own (remember the insurance servicing maintenance repairs) ditto a lorry! but if you want to go out and about regularly (ie every week or more) buy a good trailor or lorry. cheap is very very false economy!!! and often not safe!

When my friend's trailer (which I can use whenever) was off the road for a long while I put an advert in a local tack shop asking for someone with a trailer parked up on yard if they wanted to rent it out every now and then. Someone replied and I can have that as and when I want it for £20. It's only about 10 mins away from the yard. That has worked well.

Now, we've scrapped friend's trailer and have a brand new Ifor Williams on long term hire for £100 a month - bargain! Between us we have 5 horses though so it is used a couple of times a week. I still would use the one from the advert too if we ever both wanted to go out on the same day but to different places.
