Anyone else fed up of not having your own horse transport?

I am selling my Range Rover to get an old Bedford to use as an ambulance for my old horse who seems to be spending more time at the vet hospital than at home!

The people at my yard are so wonderful but I hate having to mooch for emergency lifts all the time!

I don't have transport but am very lucky as I can hack to riding club events it takes about 45-1 hour and I have a sensible hacking pony. Quite a few people hack to riding club and the club tries to run events at venues that members without transport can hack to.

I could never afford to buy and run a lorry. It is not just the purchase cost but insurance, tax, break down cover etc also as I tend to want to go places others on my yard do not want to go to I would have to manage on my own. I hire a lorry and driver if I want to go to a big show or clinic and it is a lot easier as then also have an extra pair of hands should an emergency happen.

It also means that I can travel my pony in a top of the range lorry with air conditioning which I could never afford to buy and have a professional driving which I think is safer.

I know how you feel. I did have a trailer but my pony wouldn't go in it and we never used it so we sold it. However, there are Dressage and Show Jumping shows at my yard once a month for most of the year so I can do those, and YO has a 7.5 tonne lorry so when she goes to RC Shows I can share a lift. Also, in the winter there are lots of hunt meets close by which I can hack to so it isn't too bad, although I would love a lorry of my own one day!

Every horse should be sold with its own trailer :D ...''comes with full tack, rugs and a Bateson'' :D

LOVE that! lol!

But I totally sympathise with you atm, this year I have no transport whatsoever :( The plan was to buy a 3.5t lorry, and I was all ready to put the deposit down, then the car stuffed up and I had to buy a new one!! Argh, so have to start saving again now, I'm hoping I'll be able to get one by Jan next year (veeeeeeery optimistic! lol!)

I defo feel your pain! My horse has gone out on loan as I cannot manage without transport any longer.

I have the newer licence and I have hired a 3.5t converted box which was lovley but looking at about £15k, and I am worried about the height in a van conversion, so think I will be going for a very light single trailer and a big estate/ small 4x4 as this seams the most convernient and cost effective solution.

I do have a reasonalbly cheap trailer for sale. Its not a branded one and its a wide single, but safe sound and ready to use. Dont know what it weights though and its about 6'10 internal height.

Dito.
There are loads of people on our yard who have trailers who are willing to take me, but none of them own a trailer large enough to fit her in. She was 17.2 when i measured her in november but as she is only 4 at the end of the month i have the feeling she has grown again. It is frustrating as i was invited to the beach last week but couldnt go.
A few people have suggested hiring one for the day but it is so expensive and there are a lot of self drive 3.5 tonne boxes that she is just too big for.
Will have to get myself a better job and get some lessons for a larger box.

Sorry - forgot to mention the important bit of where I am located! I am based in Thornbury, it's in South Gloucestershire - inbetween Bristol and Gloucester. I tend to stick to rides in the Avon, Somerset and Gloucestershire regions, including the Quantocks, The Ridgeway etc. I am also about 30 mins drive from Badminton, so this is another good option for a weekend trip out or the beach at Brean or Weston Super Mare.

if you need a hacking buddy for the beach i would be happy to join you! i live in weston super mare and keep my horse a 10 minute hack from sand bay beach in weston!!
i have a tb that needs to go nice and quiet or he gets abit excitable!!

Yep very very frustrating! Used to have transport but that had to get sold when i moved house started college/work etc.
Got people who i can get lifts of to some events but I miss going away alone (well with my mum as driver!) and being able to get on with things in my own way and at whatever time/come back whatever time you want.

It is frustrating. My horse is based with my trainer so he takes us to shows luckily. Would still be nice to just pop out for a clinic or something though. Its not the buying of a horsebox which is so much of a problem, its more that I would never want to go anywhere on my own! Don't have anyone to drag along, no way would I want to be struggling on my own with crazy horse at a show. Much more fun with other people (and much better for my nerves having trainer with me!).

I know, this is sooooooo frustrating !! Me and a friend were hiring a trailer last year but that all fell through and I haven't really managed to find an alternative.........
If anyone is in the Uttoxeter/Kingstone area and needs a well behaved travelling companion to shows etc, then I'm yer man (well, lady actually!!)

I'd love a van box, I can't drive lorries or trailers!! But no can afford for me :(

My mother has a box, but due to some freakish problem that the mechanic cannot understand, it won't pass it's MOT, so it's SORN until we have the funds to replace the entire axle - and thats assuming that will help!!!
