I used to ride anything and not be worried but now when it comes to getting on horses I dont know I get worried. Ive not really had any bad falls and can get on a horse I know and it not bother me, its just new horses. Ive been riding for years, showjumped to 1.40m and broken in many horses.
I did have a horse bolt with me and it was totally out of control, seems I cant get this out of my head, this is affecting my riding, any advice?

sounds like you have lost abit of confidence, confident rider cd's are good x

and what blucanoo says .... getting older has a great way of making you aware of how fragile you can be

Maybe getting older?!

You realize how delicate your life is.

Do you need to ride lots of different horses?
Is it your job?

Maybe just stick to one horse, build a good relationship with it and trust each other.

If you have to ride different horses just be sensible, wear a body protector, dont put yourself in dangerous situations or take risks.
If the horse is fresh, lung it before you get on.

thanks for replys, I am looking for a new horse so having to try them out.
its a horrible feeling as I was always so brave, must be getting older thats doing it then :-(
I do have a lovely horse who I have no worries riding but I get on something new and have visions of it galloping off.

I've definitely lost my nerve a little as I've got older. I'm not keen on jumping anymore, whereas when I was a child and in my twenties I'd jump anything. My back isn't as flexible as it was, so that doesnt help matters either :(

I do dressage now, alongside all the other 'older' ladies :D

I'm also looking for a new horse, but scared to death when it comes to riding them.
I took the wonderful advice I got off people on the forum and have started having lessons again, riding different horses and ponies, and it does seem to be helping although I still have my wobbly days.
Looking forward to next year when I shall start my search again for my perfect ploddy cob!

I don't think I can help at all, I'm afraid - but it's comforting to hear someone else own up to what I've been thinking, too! I've had several new horses recently and they've all been great, but my nerves have deteriorated rapidly over the last 2 years, and my tolerance levels have also diminished.

There's been no ridden 'antics' or anything to pin a confidence loss on, though. I think the poster who mentioned that maybe it's just down to priorities changing has made a very good point. I fell on ice last winter and chipped my elbow, a silly incident but it really made me feel unexpectedly fragile and daft. I'm putting my confidence 'reduction' down to getting older, feeling a bit more mortal, and maybe being just a bit more sensible these days when it comes to managing risk!!
