As per title really... you agree a fee and then you get the bill and find you've got extra hay on becuase they need it in the field?

My horse doesn;t eat the night hay in the field - shes stabled at night. is it me or is this out of order....

typing with fury at my 40 quid surcharge for the month!

If the hay in the field is only put out at night and your horse is in then I would be querying the extra on your bill, if it is put out whilst your horse is in the field through the day then you need to check your contract.

That's a bit steep. The only extras I get on my bill is clipping, worming, if he is being particularly grubby one month and needs additional shavings.

Your horse goes through 40 quids worth of hay in a month... on top of the hay thats included in your livery?

I'd check your contract...

Ouch! I'd be looking elsewhere...

Basically all the extras on top of my monthly livery are done at cost plus a really small amount. They do not seek to profit much at all on the extras and hay is totally ad lib, they only get annoyed if you are wasting tonnes and stacking it up on the muck heap. When at the end of summer the grass gets down a bit they put bales in the fields at no charge as they have run out of grazing which is included as part of my livery bill so they stand the cost. Do you get a rebate for lack of grazing if you are paying for alternative feed?

In which case I would bring this up with your YO, as £40 worth of hay is a lot of extra hay to be feeding in the field per month, considering your horse is stabled at night. Maybe bring it up over a coffee and keep it as amicable as you can, hay has shot up in price and this may have something to do with it?

On full livery I'd be expecting all hay to be included.

I am on DIY and when I pay for my hay for the month, it's all he can eat. I would be off the scale if I received a charge ONTOP of that!!!!

Are you kidding!! I'm so mad i can't tell you. have been looking elsewhere all day but DIY is a serious no no for me at the minute due to my work pattern. Considering just renting a field though i've always struggled with the idea of them being out 24-7... maybe silly.

But going from a bill of 400 plus to about 60 quid a month is seriously tempting and may prevent me having to give up my horse. OH is savage about this bill....lol Its more than our mortgage.

Yeah first port of call is YO.
Otherwise just simplify your life, its meant to be fun remember!! Your horses CAN survive on less, get a sharer maybe, or someone to pay for rides and help out and maybe move to assisted?
Fingers crossed it works out for you!

ouch thats steep, id defo look into keeping your horse out, maybe get a field with a decent sized shelter, i pay £25 a week for a 2.5 acre field running water, tap and full sized cattle trough, with a 30ft barn in the middle as a shelter (i can shut her in too). my girl has ad lib hay and she only eats one big round bale every 8 weeks. and i only pay £25 for the hay, straw is free, so £40 extra for just hay doesnt seem right, defo speak to the yo.

I'm on DIY but everyone including the full liveries got charged a little extra last month due to the horses eating more hay as they had to stay in due to the bad weather. I was fine about paying that as long as its a one off really as hay/bedding is included. We get one tubtrug of shavings a day to top up with and get charged extra if we want more than this.

I'd definitely query the £40 with the YO as thats a lot of extra hay. Before I moved to my current yard I was spending £22 on a bale of hay which was lasting about 3 weeks with horse turned out during day and coming in at night.

Full livery is full livery!

I would take the bill back to the YO and say you've been miss charged as your bill is wrong. As someone else said, you don't get a reduced fee because your horse isn't getting the grass you pay for!!

I've never been charged extra for feed or hay. I only pay for the supplements I want my horses to have.

If they don't take it off, the. I would move yards. If you do find a DIY yard, you can always get a freelance groom to do them :)

Good luck!

£85 pw for full livery seems v.reasonable to me. The area I am in (South) full livery is £120 pw. The price of hay has gone up rather a lot, so make sure that's not the reason your bill has increased, as this I feel is reasonable

Definitely have a word with YO!!!

Majority of livery yards in my area are £50 -£70 a wk, feed included and ad lib hay, 1 bale shavings per week....
£40 for hay is taking the pee!!!!!
