A little while ago I noticed Murph rubbing his tail frantically in the field shelter. Went to chase him off but just would not stop so brought him in to check him. On taking off his rug (hw turnout with thick tail flap), I discovered under his tail at the dock is sore and weeping Poor lad, no wonder he was rubbing it.
Anyway have bathed with hibiscrub and put some sudocrem on for now, quite a challenge as he was clamping his tail down and really didn't want me to touch it. Now my thinking on this is that the air hasn't been getting under his tail due to the rug and that has caused the problem, does this make sense to you experts out there, and has it happened to anyone else? Also, next question is how to sort it, I can't really take his rug off in this weather, so think I might vandalise an old rug that is a little small by cutting off the tail flap. If it doesn't look better in a day or two I will of course speak to the vet but at this state don't think it is urgent, unless anyone tells me I am totally wrong with the rug idea and need to get him checked.
Thanks for getting this far.

That is what I am hoping, and am going to take a pair of scissors to an old Rambo tonight (sacrilege!). Just didn't want to take the watch and wait course of action if anyone had experience of this problem needing a vet asap.

The fillet string is low, don't think there is any way it could have rubbed. He has had heavyweights turnouts on every winter for the last 5 years without this problem, but has had a new rug within the last month and I just wondered if the fact the tail flap seemed more padded had caused the problem. If there is no improvement within a couple of days with the sudocrem I am going to speak to the vet, as its a mucky area I don't want the sore getting infected

I understand he was wormed in December with Equest(been at working livery at a college), was going to do him again at the end of the month but think will bring it forward in case.

My horse does this too. Its sort of either side of his dock but towards the top of it. I just put dermobian on it (Ive still got a bit of this precious cream left!!) and it drys up and goes til the next time he does it. He just loves me itching his bum, on his hair of course but I think he also rubs it on his salt lick. His worm counts have come back clear so its not worms in his case.

Well after 2 days of sudocrem, and a vandalised rug (I cut the tail flap off an old one), there is a great improvement. The sore bit under his dock has nearly dried up. It will be interesting to see if it flares up again if I put the thicker rug back on, which I will have to as when the snow goes he will hopefully be out 24/7 again.
