My H/W cob has done it again! What ever/where ever we put him he crashes through the fencing. He's been through hedges, post and rail, and electric fencing. We've put tyres in front of the fences to stop him having a clear run up (he chucked them up the field), we've put rows of electric fencing - 5 foot high 3 rows 4 foot apart. we've bought rope fencing, tape fencing, the only thing we havent bought is a round pen type thing. We've tried calmers, everything! Theres plenty of grass, he's got company, he's exercised 4 times a week, he'll be stood calmly in the field, next thing he's out and destroyed another fence. I'm at my wits end.

yeh the beginning of the xmas holidays my 3 yr old jumped out of a mates paddock 5 days in a row- 4 times one day.

but we just kept going and now he's stopped. what about electric on like the highest setting...

how odd!! if hes got grass/company etc

You have a free range horse!

Why does he jump out? It is only when you get to the bottom of things that you will be able to cap him.

Is he being bullied or chased?

Also, why isn't this horse being enterd in competitions? he obviously love s to jump!

Seriously though, if it gets to be a problem tethering him could be the answer. Before evveryone jumps up and down... if tethering is done properly, there is nothing wrong with it!

we have a horse on livery whos a nightmare

we are in the peaks, so dry stone walls, and they get stressy about anything else...he keeps ploughing through them...we keep putting them back up

and he jumped a five bar gate and came galloping down the road once

hes a nightmare

but he also climbs out stables, he breaks down the doors if both shut, and so and and so forth....

damn hoss

my previous horse, a 21yr old cob, used to escape constantly. he was once found in the neighbours garden, munching happily on their lawn. He walked straight through a post and rail fence once. He used to walk through electric tape, then clamber over a low wall to get on to the yard, and then used to just stand there looking bored. Very annoying.

Have you tried mains electric fencing?

They are sods when they discover that they can escape at will aren't they?

Is there anywhere he specifically goes once he's loose?

Personally, I'd shell out and make the horse a turnout pen with either solid fences or with those high mesh panels, you don't have an old tennis court hanging around do you?

No, honestly, I know someone who had the same problem as you and ended up keeping her horse in a grass court!

I had a Boarder here who would walk through anything, the only thing that kept him in was 5 strands of wire (on permanent posts) connected to the mains. I had got to the stage of considering hobbles for the blasted animal.

Good Luck, you have my Sympathy.

My two year old cob has a similar habit, he's pushed down post and rail, gone through electric tape and crushed wire fencing (which was behind the other fencing!!) ...turns out he turns round and reverses until it either breaks/slips over his back/crumples under his feet!! we've started positioning the electric fence at a lower level, so his limbs touch it rather than his rug!

Yes, have exactly just the same problem and have resigned myself to the fact that my cob prefers to live in. If it is too cold or hot he will break the gate to get back in and if there is a fly in the field he will jump the gate and go back to his stable. Have come to an agreement with him that he only needs to spend an hour a day outside!

mine - only goes out for a few hours as otherwise he stands (not necessarily by the gate but just stands in a part of the field staring.) He also panics and jumps out if left longer. The funniest is if it has just been raining he doesnt know what to do with himself and wont eat the grass very much.

Thanks, I was beginning to think I was going mad, glad I'm not the only one with problems. We have thought of mains electric fencing but there are public footpaths going through the fields so we have been told we could be in trouble if someone gets a shock. I've had him nearly 10 years and not yet found why he does it. We've decided its just because he can.
He's hunting mad (I've not hunted him, too strong) last time he heard the hunt he ran away to join the hunt for 2 days, run just ran through the fences until he got to 2 sets of double gates and couldn't get any further, but refused to come back until he realised they weren't coming back for him. Foxed him this week, put him in the stable with a radio and his ears stuffed with cotton wool.
He is so funny sometimes, he often arrives back at the stable dragging 40 yards of tape and posts with a joyous 'hello, I'm here' winney and looks totally amazed we aren't jumping up and down with glee he's there.
At one livery, he would get out and wander into their house and say hello (we weren't there long!) We have wondered if he was an orphan and bottle fed and not sure he's a horse.

he sounds like a right character!! my youngster is kept in most of the time now as he cant stay in a field! he's been every where, up to the stables a couple of fields above my house, he's been across the road where sum more stables are, he'll wonder round the yard chasing the hens or the dogs! he's so funny!! i love him to bits!! but i think thats what makes him who he is!
