I'm a newbie and was just wondering if there are many other stallion-owners on here, what breeds you have, etc?

And if anyone else has difficulty keeping weight on their boys during the stud season?

Yes we have two TB stallions one May I is 15.2 and black and the Other High Tension is 16.1 and bay.
I dont have any trouble with keeping weight on mine at all but then they are very laid back about life .

16.3 Grey BWP Int Grade A (fussy eater but found the right feed that he likes and keeps weight on!

)
and
14.2 Coloured Danish Int JA (no probs weight always looks stunning
grin.gif
)....
Did also have
16.2 Black Westphalian Int SJ/GP Dressage (had weight issues when reached late 20's but again found right feed after some experimentation sp!!)
frown.gif

and
14.2 Grey French Int JA (nickname had the term 'pig' in it, best doer you could ever had was alway 'fat' even on a handful of fresh air)
frown.gif

Also have
16h (eventually) Bay 4yo SFxHann SJer (came third in Discovery yesterday - so very very proud mummy today - no problems with weight but can fire up on certain foods)
cool.gif

and
15.2h Bright Bay 4yo Stressage horse (with SJ breeding that is going to bbmat to train - can get plump easily but think that has more to do with his idleness than anything else, he really is so chilled its unbelieveable, comatosed maybe!

Ye I have two.

Treliver Decanter Palomino British Warmblood Sport horse - no problem with is weight he is so laid back and a good doer.

Kensons Aragorn RID - looses weight like mad in the covering season and puts it all back in the winter, quite hard to manage as we have to shovel the food down him in the summer and watch his weight in the winter.

We have:

Rupert (rupert steiff) 14 y/o Grey Belgian Warmblood SJ bred but is a dressage horse. He is very overweight at the mo as he is off work with a sore back leg
frown.gif

Merlin (mfss raubritter) 5y/o Bay Oldenburg BD/BSJA who lost weight very badly when sent away at stud last season, but we have kept him with us this year and looks fantastic. (Baileys no1 is fantastic!)

Znoopy (mfss zigeuneknabe) 3 y/o KWPN who will hopefully be a dressage and sj stallion, he is quite gangly but well covered, he is still growing though!

Sunday (Welt hint of pink) 3 y/o Hannoverian Dresage horse who looks fab on just maintenance nuts, he is not covering though..

Socks (Espen R) 2y/o colt who got ulcerative colitis this winter so he looks very thin, but he is growing an inch every day it seems! so his food is definitely going somewhere! He is on youngstock cubes and the no. 1 again.

Our other young colts are just living off grass and hay and look fine!

We feed conditioning cubes mixed with maintenance nuts to give them a bit extra, and a stallion supplement in the season to keep them looking good, and selenium and lysine to improve their semen quality.

What stallions do you have?

Wow - some lovely and famous stallions on here! Would love to see pics if you could post some!

I just have the one - H Tobago, pure bred Arab, 3yo, international champion in hand but not backed yet and of course not yet proven as a sire as this is his first season.

He looks fab, glossy, gleaming with health and bursting with energy, but needs more weight on for the show season and we're struggling a bit with this as he's finding the whole business of being a breeding stallion very exciting... about to put him on Bailey's Outshine, which is v high-calorie but non-fizzing so should help...

Sounds as though most of you have got this issue sorted - or have enviably laid-back stallions so it isn't a problem.

Please post some pics - I'd love to see your stallions!

This is my boy (pics taken last year as a 2yo):

We have just one now, the other was put to sleep last November.
He is called Harper's Bornival a Belgian Warmblood x TB out of an Advanced eventing mare, he is 16.1 hh and has just started Affiliated eventing aged 16.
He's a mix of stress and laid backness, he gets very uptight if you change his home routine or field, but is very laid back to ride and compete.
We have found he only way to keep his weight on in summer is to keep him in every night and at least half the daytime. outside he fence walks/trots non stop, only pausing opccasionally to snatch a mouthful of grass. It does mean little roadwork however as he does his own fitness..
We feed him on Alfa oil, spillers slow response mix, speedi beet and some basic coarse mix, he gets topspec and liquid cortaflex too. (and ad lib haylage)
In winter he is restricted as he is such a good doer, and it's frustrating to keep him looking good in the summer, so I understand your question.

He is lovely, the yard has a stallion an appoloosa 3yr old, not sure about the weight loss as this is his first year with us, and he's only done one covering.
Here's his pic

Well if we are naming them
laugh.gif
lol
grin.gif

They are
Loheky Helios de Bornival 23yo BWP - eats Competition Mix even though I retired him last year, he real picky about whats in his bucket!
blush.gif
He is a complete gentleman but does get excited in stud season but is still easy to handle.
Georgeo II - he is on 16+ at the mo, he seems to be doing just fine on it... but haven't had his very long so may change we will see how he does when we start collecting off of him, very sweet and quiet stallion, even stabled next to mares.
CVS Hot Business - 4yo Stressage horse, currently eating competition nuts, he is incredibly laid back with life, feeding soon to be bbmat's choice...
CVS Bellagio - 4yo Show Jumper, currently eating slow release mix.

Did have Romeo he was also on 16+ Mix, extremely nice natured stallion with people but was prone to excitement in stud season leading to some intersting habits
and
Ousbek who was on fresh air (no i'm not that mean he got lots of chaff with a handful of 16+ mixed in for taste, he was a tubby pony!) again extremely nice natured and even when excited in stud season could still be handled by his child rider.

helly (top left) gets bored with little fences so makes his own amusement and starts jumping everything as if its 1.40, its quite funny really its as if he saying bigger bigger I want it bigger!
Your little munchkin is bottom left, they are not great pics but I didn't want to put best pics up, i wanted home ones (poo stains and dust and all
blush.gif
)
Bottom right is the 4yo that came 3rd Discovery at the weekend (he's only been registered just over a week!)

"At the risk of everyone shouting at me!! pics of my boys, not as nice as yours though!! who did the one with the black back ground?"

Are we not supposed to post pictures of our stallions? Oh dear - I'm really sorry if I've broken any rules! I've only recently managed to figure out how to post photos, so I get carried away a bit!
blush.gif
I've seen quite a few pics of stallions on here, so I assumed it was OK...

The photo with the black background was taken by Erwin Escher - a German horse-photographer who specializes in Arabs. I can post some more of his pics, but will just wait till I'm sure it's allowed.

henryhorn - mine does 'self-imposed fitness workouts' too - when he's turned out he works himself really hard, mostly galloping, until he's covered in sweat, and then catches his breath and starts again - keeps this up for over an hour! Great for muscle and fitness, not so great for keeping weight on!

He looks a nice boy!
smile.gif
Do you show him?

I'm hoping mine will calm down too as the novelty wears off lol ! It is his first season, so must all be very new and exciting for him...

We've put him on bailey's Outshine which is v high-calorie but non-heating, so hoping this will help.

Thanks your boy is very handsome too. Have to admit don't do as much with him as I would like hes never been shown, apart from one show where he won the stallion class though he was the only one in the class
frown.gif
. Though the judge was scottish and had arab mares and loved him said he was almost ready for showing in arab classes across the water and that he would win. I would love to get him shown in a few classes but its the transport and cost of getting him to England and I have never seen an arab class never mind competing in one. He has only served two mares(one twice) and his third foal will be due next year though we have our first outside mare coming this week. He is up for loan and someone was interested in him to show so you might see him this year in an arab class.
