Am really in a rut at the moment, this weather is doing my head in!! Got fat, unfit and probably bored horses in the field, with grass up to their bellies and absolutely no enthusiasm to do anything with them......how bad is that??!!

Anyone else feeling the same way??

'Tis difficult! Was supposed to be boxing up to go for a hack this afternoon, but weather forecast(!) is wrong again, so at the minute am witnessing a torrential downpour and thunderstorm...this also happened yesterday, the day before that, the day before that....ad infinitum!

I'm lunging in between showers to try and keep fitness up and to save tack from getting soaked. Shame about the damage being done to field!

I'm the same, haven't ridden since the weekend. Spent loads of time with him in the stable though.
Apart from getting soaked when out, being really warm and humid and getting eaten with all the awful flies around, can't seem to muster any enthusiasm at the moment :(

I think the less you ride the less enthusiasm you have as you get out of your routine. And the weather most definitely doesn't help! I ummed and ahhed over taking Fabio out yesterday, mainly cos i felt i couldn't be bothered! But gave myself a kick up the behind and went for a hack and really enjoyed it. Even managed to pick the 2 hour gap in the rain to go, heavens opened as soon as i'd untacked him!

Yes another one here, we have access to too much grazing and I think the weather is just helping it grow and grow. Pony is carrying more fat than I'm happy with but doing my best with restricting turnout and riding but that's been limited at times. I''ll normally try and ride about 5 times in a week as if the weather's good there's nothing better but with the weather and the rain and other things dripping into my soul I know I'm not as enthusiastic as normal so until last week was only doing 2-3. The yard has gone very quiet too which doesn't help. However this morning as the sun was out and it was blue skies and fluffy white clouds I girded my loins and forced myself to hack out. Especially as the weather could be thundery showers later. The horse flies were terrible as that damp moist heat after the rain and we both got eaten alive but we did it. And both of us were ploddy but got some trotting in. However on the way back we passed a local woman getting back in her car from walking her dogs, she used to keep horses herself and she saw how slow the pony was and grinned and said "He's not much of a volunteer is he?" which made me laugh out loud :D So I suppose I'd just say force yourself to get on and get out if you can and then it feels better.

Thats very true, haven't ridden them for weeks, always something else to do, think I am just making excuses really. Find it much easier to ride in the winter, coz they are in and need to something, but when they are out its too easy just to leave them there!

Also, for the first time in all my years of horses, I have them at home on my own, no other people around to ride with, spur me on and I'm not the most self-motivated person!

God, listen to me.......massive kick up the ar*e needed!!!!

I am full of enthusiasm, but my manege is falling apart, I have no transport, Trev's not fun to hack & he is horrendous at comps! (Therefore if we hacked to a PC-type venue a mile away, loaded with whizzy ponies, or the HT a mile the other way, we would die several times over.)

He is tricky travelling too, so when I spent £150 on 2-day lorry hire to do sj & dr lessons on successive days, it took 6 hours & some sedalin to load on the first day (= no lesson) & 15 mins to load on the 2nd day followed by such a paddy that we had to unload asap on the 2nd day (= no lesson).

I have to school in my manege around the deep/shallow/slippy/edges of membrane coming up bits, day after day after day...!

I am hoping to get the school sorted, get some lessons at home & enter some online dr comps!! I used to compete Catembi virtually every w'end, all year round, up to Novice BD & 1 m 15 BS, & I jolly well miss it!

There is no point trying to get going this year as all our money is going on the house (was structurally unsound) so the plan is to take this year off, then next year sort out transport & a more obliging horse!

T x

Nope, have to ride in it if I want to compete in it!
Had a flat lesson on Monday with dressage trainer, jumping Tuesdayand this morning (visiting instructor) , on tuesday also took him and other horse for hack ride and lead on roads, wed hacked and hopefully tomorrow gallops or hill work/hack!

Only thing that stops me from riding is if school is submerged or the roads have too much water on them!

It is depressing however to have a choice between damp and wet jods to ride in through :(

Totally know where you're coming from. I keep my horses at home, and sometimes it's difficult to get the enthusiasm to ride but I always feel better once I've gone out. I think it's about getting into the habit.

Goodness knows how we're going to cope when it comes to winter though, cos I always feels I need the summer break to renew my enthusiasm for coping with the mud etc.

i know where your coming from... where it keeps raining the ground is turning into a bog and is slippery so i cant ride or lunge and i dont want to hack as said horse is only just coming back into work and keeps napping and bucking which i dont want on the roads as i also dont want to fall off on concrete so im a bit stuck... he hasnt been ridden for more than an hour since october and hes beginning to get very bored... so am i to be honest and im supposed to be doing stuff with my youngester but the ground is too wet and we have no school! its hard and im loosing the will to live!

I am sick of getting drenched and the wet ground but I will always ride because I do enjoy my before work pootles around the lanes. I also have a driving factor in that my lad needs the exercise to avoid him getting laminitis again.
But as some have said, if you get out of the routine, it is hard to pick it up again if you have no motivating reason to ride, like competitions, laminitis threat, weight gain problems etc.

Yes, I did a post about this only last week I think it was?

Am feeling very unmotivated. Too much maintence to be done lately around the yard that seems to take up ALL my time. Weather is rubbish. I'm at home now too (well 300 yards down the road) and again, noone really to ride with. I have people to hack with if I want, which I do sometimes but I miss having people around whilst schooling (though having a school to myself is good!) miss having people around to chat to in general really :sigh:

I want to compete too but lack of transport atm and funds to hire anything is making it impossible. Could compete next weekend as there's dressage over the road but I'm away, TYPICAL!

He is getting fat too as the grass it just coming through so much. Trying to ride 5-6 times a week but the last couple of weeks it's been about 4 :(

Doesn't help that my life is just so hectic atm and work is really busy and stressful and I just feel exhausted all the time!

Come on you lot. Get ur butts in gear!!!!
Imagine how you would feel if your horses went lame and you couldn't ride for months.
I say make the most of sound horse and not freezing cold!!!

Same here haven't ridden for months not weeks! It's been so long no longer feel guilty about it. OH is threatening to sell them as they are as he puts it very expensive ornaments!:)

Can't do much else when it is 39C and like breathing in air from an oven out there :(

I haven't ridden for weeks because it is simply too hot, and when it isn't hot it's dark and the flies are just getting their second wind and searching for dessert!

Oh yes. New horse who was on loan fractured scapula spine and has had to be kept in mini paddock as would be nuts in stable. However owner wanted him put down, or if I payed vets bills & looked after him I could have him. He is now ours! Well 7 weeks on he is doing well. However, the Spaniard who I thought I would have more time to ride has turned feral! The weather has been foul, my dear mother in Law died from cancer two weeks ago, funeral been held. Daughter due to give birth any day now & other daughter gets married 14th July!

I'm still working full time & have lost plot completely!

Aaaaggghh!
