Anyone else leave their horses naked last night?

When I arrived at the yard this morning it appeared I was the only one to leave their horse without a rug. I know it was slightly chilly but all the horses were stabled and they are far from being under conditioned! Someone tell me they too left their horses unrugged please ...

I am sure there have been loads left unrugged. :)

It went down to 4 degrees here last night :) Mine had his med/lite turnout on last night but only because he doesn't much coat and I don't want him getting too woolly as he is not going to be in enough work to warrant clipping the first half of winter.

Mine are unrugged and will remain so even the TB's, they will get a waterproof one if it turns really bad later in the winter!

Of course we did!
We have 4, including a 29 yr old cob, who may well not be going to go through the winter. We opened the gate into a new field after they had been fed last night and the spent the, admittedly chilly, night eating outside. They are all absolutely fine this morning. The oldie has worn a M/W recently to counter wind and rain but she much prefers to be without. IMO far too many horses are over-rugged, very few horses are actually delicate.

We did too, and will for ages yet! What do those people do in winter? They must hve the poor things laden up with so much padding they can hardly move! They're horses. They're fine with a bit of cold. Thats why they have fur. Don't worry what everyone else does - you're doing the right thing. We have a lady keeps her horse near us, who rugs her natives about now, then grumbles that she can't get the weight off them... Let them use a few calories keeping warm!

I absolutely agree with this Honey08...however mine were rugged last night! I hasten to add that they are naked and sunning themselves now tho!!
Mels is arthritic and gets very sore and grumpy if she is cold, an Seren appears to have forgotten all about growing a winter coat and looks like she did in July! They only had light ones on though!

The only right thing to do is to go by your own horse.

As some say on here, their horses are fine no rugs/out etc. so that's the right thing to do.

Others say their horses need some help on a cold night (if they struggle to keep weight on or for health issues such as arthritis etc)

My rule of thumb is if my horse is happy naked outside when it is cold then he will stay naked.

If I go down to the yard one morning and he is shivering and tucked up then he is telling me he needs a rug.

personally I would prefer to keep him living out as long as possible, rug when necessary and bring in when there is no alternative.

It is warming up again round here next week! going back up to 20 + degrees during the day and 14 at night!

possible indian summer? hope so :)

Mine is stabled overnight as our yard does not allow overnight turnout and he had a summer sheet on because being stabled he cant move round to much to warm himself. I am going to start rugging him up more soon as he is only 4 and I want to delay clipping as much as possible  My 7 yo Welsh B will go without until I give her a low trace clip when shes fluffy and even then she will only have a lightweight t/o on because she is soooooo fat haha

My girl is still naked and starting to sport a nice fluffy coat. However mine was the only naked horse on our yard last night some are already in medium weight combos! I never rug till i clip and as she will more than likely be turned away for a few weeks beggining of October i am trying not to clip till after that if i can get away with it!

One TB has a rain sheet on, that's all. I'm thinking about rugging the 31 year old but really want a fluffier coat first! She's fine but I am just paranoid about her. The rest won't be rugged for weeks yet, I hope, otherwise they will have to have half a dozen rugs on when it actually gets cold. It is chillier here now, but far from cold as yet.

Mine was out naked as well and she'll be that way for most of the winter. She's got a shelter and lots of other trees to shelter under. I never rug unless I really really have to. My mare's got a nice wooly coat coming through, is fat and is a welsh mountain pony- none of those makes me think she needs a rug :) If it gets seriously cold I may put a lightweight or medium weight rug on but otherwise she'll be naked all winter.

its going to be 0 deg here tonight. Thats righty! Freezing.
So shoot me now, mine are naked.

It aint the cold that gets them, its the wind and rain thats a bigger problem.

Mine spent many a happy sunny day last winter rugless in 3ft of snow at -15 deg here.

Out in a barren field nekkid. Went down this morning and they were all sunning themselves :D

This :D

Looked happy this morning, soaking up the sun :)

Will put a lightweight neckless one on the Dizz, just to make it easier for riding as they are out 24/7 :D

Little Cob is fluffing up nicely and settling into his role as Chief Grass Eater Extordanaire :D

However........................my skanky old dog had his cool dude weatherbeeta on last night.

He is the dude. Other dog thinks he looks like an eejit.

Yep and will do for at least another month, I'd have thought, and then only because he'll be clipped for hunting. *whispers* last year he went rugless after having had his first clip, which was only a low neck and breast/girth area, because he is one boiling hot pony! Cruel witch, ain't I? ;) :D
