Anyone else leave their horses naked last night?

I always get slated because at the first sight of rain I have a lightweight turnout on and my boy is rugged up to the max through winter but I don't care what people say... I know my horse and I know that he easily drops weight and I if I dont I end up clipping every other week too keep his coat short! I havent clipped him yet because I don't need to and atm he is in at night and wearing a light weight stable

My 5yr TB is out during the day, if its windy/cool or raining she has her LW turnout on. In the daytime it hasn't really got very cold here yet. At night the tempreture has dropped so she is in with a woolen newmarket rug on, which is warmer than a summer sheet but not as heavy as her stable rug.
She will however be getting clipped in a few weeks and depending on the weather will wear a MW turn out and a stable rug over her blanket at night, if its colder/warmer will rug accordingly :)

My 2yr cob and welsh a wintered out last year naked, they had lots of hay and grew huge shaggy coats and came out of winter looking well. They will be naked again this winter :)

I just don't understand what the fuss is about! Does it actually matter if other people choose to rug their horses? Why do some people feel obliged to pass comment on what other people do - rugging a horse/not rugging a horse is hardly the great equine welfare crime of the century, surely. My horse wears a rug, her field mate doesn't. I know my horse, I don't know her field mate, her field mate's condition is none of my business, therefore I don't even have an opinion, let alone feel the need to voice it.

I think vociferous opinions seem to be par for the course amongst a lot of horsey people and I find it wearing. I post an innocuous request for a second hand piece of bridlework on another website, and get opinions which weren't invited, or needed.

What happened to live and let live; such a trivial subject really shouldn't illicit such a massive debate! We are all using this forum because of a common love of horses, everyone has differing views and opinions and ways of doing things and nobody is going to change their views just because someone on a forum proclaims them to be wrong.

The fuss is about horses' comfort. If I rug my horses they would sweat an be uncomfortable, but my friend's eventers who are clipped would shiver if turned out naked.

It is not about personal preference, it is about the horses'
preferences.

But it's still nobody elses business. Your friend rugs her horses, you do not. Fair enough. But 4 pages of people bickering about who's right and who's wrong? That's what I meant by fuss!

The OP opened it as a debate - maybe you should be the one who stops the fuss as it isn't your thread anyway. The rug debate happens every year and threads like this put peoples' minds at rest if nothing else. No, they won't change peoples' minds 9/10 but they will help those who feel pressurised by people they know.
