Anyone else moved to a cheaper yard?

As the title really.

I think I may need to move to a cheaper yard.
Got the vet out friday to tell me what he thinks about seren and her bad foot, she is not lame but I worry if I should retire her or not, or just carry on. Hopefully he will give me a definitive answer, he is a very good vet, and he knows seren's background.

So has anyone else had to move to a cheaper yard to cut back on costs in the last year or so?
 
oh god yes....a couple of times to be honest, so long as my horses are happy, safe and well then thats good enough for me, but yes have moved to cheaper yard to cut back or to be able to get other things....for the horses.
 
I rented a field behind my house and offered free grazing as I had too much. No takers would you believe...no-one answered the ad! I let the field go and halved my costs and it was the best thing that I ever did. Now on nice livery yard, pony has company and it is much more affordable.
 
I had my 2 ponies on DIY costing me £226 pm, have now rented a field for £385 pa, saving me a fortune

As my ponies are youngsters they didnt need the facilities at the yard.

Gosh your field is an absolute bargain...mine was 25.00 a week...still cheap but my DIY livery is 50.00 per calender month and it is out of this world. I only have one pony so obviously cheaper for me.
 
i moved from part livery at £120 a week for my 2, to a private place with stables and 10 acres, for £90 per month for the 2 at the loss of an arena and mucking out - but mine are out 24/7 now anyways so just have poo picking
 
I moved to a cheaper yard because Im on maternity leave and my pay would end after nine months etc... I was paying £150 pcm and the new yard was only £80 pcm. It has been a good thing finacially but Ive been soooooo unhappy there! Ive not been able to ride and security was questionable. Im moving again to another yard which is £12 dearer than the first yard yet its providing me with assisted diy. Which is really good as Im due to go back to work in a month or two and I can afford the costs now. 6 months of missery was worth the saving tho'

That sounds like quite a bargain. I would miss having some of the facilities but one has to compromise sometimes
 
I moved to a yard nearer to home as thought would cut my costs but as have to provide own bedding and feed on this yard then it is actually dearer. Am considering moving back to old yard though seems such a hastle so may end up staying put after all lol x

Yes, I think there would be some serious adjustment. Things are up in the air really. If vet says to retire I may consider a retirement livery place for her, I just dont know

I think either way, retire or not I will give somewhere cheaper a go first and see how it goes. Thanks for sharing

Lol, its a tough one, I really have to think it through carefully. In a ideal world I think I would stay put
 
I moved last autumn as was back at uni and needed to save the money. Was paying £10 a week for grass livery and although saving a lot of money finding it very difficult - no facilities and although hacking is superb there's no-one really to ride out with. Have been looking at other yards for a few weeks and have been really careful to make sure I calculate absolutely everything, even petrol costs. As a way to save money it was fantastic, but just didnt suit me..

This is what I would potentially do, but if she will be retired then its no odds apart from it be harder work for me. Will see what happens on friday with the vet, but a cheaper venture in terms of basic livery might be best for me
 
If I had to retire one then would definitely stay there. Has been the easiest 6 months of horse-owning I've ever had! There are only a few horses there, but we all do a rota basis so horses are fed, hayed and checked twice a day but we all only do 3 turns a week each. I actually missed the interaction with my horse though, and the mucking out bizarrely -

This is it, well come friday I hope to have a good idea. It could just be I am worrying too much or that I am right. I have just started inquiring into local cheaper livery yards yesterday, so we shall see
 
Well I moved mine to a place I'm renting alone (7 acre field with stables) and it is cheaper. But the main motivation for moving them was to have my own place, I would have gone had it been more expensive. As it happens I went from paying £22 a week per horse to paying £10 a week per horse. But I do all the maintenance so that incurs additional costs.
 
I moved my mare when I bought a foal last November (2008). I'd been paying £50 a week DIY which included bringing in and feeding (yikes, I know). Moved to a private yard in village, £40 per week for two. So it's £40 a month cheaper and saves me about £100 in fuel - which I can spend on help if I'm away.
So basically, the moral of the story is to get two horses, because it's cheaper than one

Sort of.
I've gone from 5 day full liv on a good yard with 2 schools, comps, saddlery&cafe etc, and moved my lot 'home' (renting outside my house)
I installed mobile stables etc and have made my own little yard. In approx a year I will have recouped the cost paid out for brand new mobile stabling and all associated costs with setting up at home, including rent, for what i was paying for 5 day full livery for one horse. And i know have 2

I'm very frugal though, but saying that, I have brand new stables, my horse has new rugs etc so I dont cut corners especially - I just shop around for the best deals on everything no matter how inexpensive. Cant believe how much full livery cost me, wont ever do it again i dont think.
