Well I set off nice and early so I would get stuck in too much traffic and couldn't even make it onto the main road for all the snow

my car is now abandoned outside a friends house and I walked home (good job I was dressed for the weather!). I hate that I can't get to him and don't know what we're going to do if I still can't get there tonight. I'm currently trying to convince my dad to buy me a 4x4 lol. Oh to keep my horse at home!

I haven't tried getting to mine yet but I am pretty sure I won't be able to in my car. The yard is 20 miles away, 6 miles of which are on very narrow, steep and twisty roads. They ALWAYS have more snow then we have so I know it will be a lot worse the nearer I get to the yard.

They will be fed and hayed by the yard owner so hopefully they will be fine, it's still horrible not being able to check on them though

My horse is out 24/7 and has haylege in his field. The YO checks on them all daily and so if the weather is bad, I feel guilty that he won't get his dinner but I know he is ok.

A 4x4 would certainly come in handy - I haven't been able to get into work yet this week. Yesterday I got stuck going up an icy hill, and today it's the snow.

Not been for a fortnight, luckily he is on full livery at a fab yard and gets put on the walker daily whilst limited turnout and no riding. I moved from my old yard so we had the walker if the dreaded weather happened.

fortunately i moved my horse to my village a month ago otherwise there is no way my tiny car would have made it to old yard its not nice

I got to mine this morning, but it started snowing here around ten o'clock, and I know that if I tried to go back now, I wouldn't get there.

Mine is out 24/7 and they have loads of really nice hay which they have been eating for a week but are now studiously ignoring because we have just moved the electric fence to give them more grazing. The owner of the other mare lives across the road from the horses, so if I can't get there it's not a disaster, as she goes over twice a day anyway.

We have been carrying water from the dairy across the fields for two weeks due to the freeze, which is a bit of a pain, but it could be worse - at least we haven't had snow until today!

I went out at 5am this morning and was fine, just icy at present, I think the snow is making its way here later, we have had some light stuff so far, so I hope I can get there tomorrow morning. Hopefully my mate can get out there to see to the girls after work later.

I would be doing the same as you asbo I couldn't not go as I am on DIY

It started snowing here, just as I was finishing doing Star this morning, at 7.15 am. It hasn't stopped snowing yet, and I've had a phone call from YO to say that the lane is blocked! She'll do Star tonight. I'll find out tomorrow am what the roads are like, but I'm expecting to be late for work.
A 15minute car journey to work, took 2 1/2 hours, I got to school at 10 am, was sent home at 11.30 because of the conditions along with other staff who don't live within walking distance.......

I am very lucky when it snows as my OH gets all macho, and chauffers me in my Disco... mind you, it can take hours to get to the yard as he stops and gets his chains out to tow lorries up the hill!

Well done you.
Has no-one else who is whingeing on here a pair of legs with which they can actually WALK to see to their horse's needs??

This is England......we talk about the weather, especially when it gets a bit unusual. I don't see anybody's post on here as 'whingeing'.

Nobody's horse is being neglected because we have made contingency plans for extreme weather!

..... I'm currently trying to convince my dad to buy me a 4x4 .....

Which won't help in the slightest if there is ICE on the roads.

Due to the weight, a 4x4 will slip far faster and in less control than a small car.

The only conditions in which a 4x4 will help, are those in which you can engage the 4WD and "plough" through on very low revs.

I have first hand experience of this, as on Christmas night driving home in my Fourtrak (no drink was involved!) I spun the vehicle round about 3 times on black ice down a very steep hill. Very scary, and the first time it has ever happened to me in about 35 years driving.

In answer to the question, my horse is 10 miles away at my parents and I don't have anyone to help to look after him so I'm just in the process of packing my bags (and the dog's!) so we can both move down there for a couple of days. If I can get to work all well and good, but essential that I can get to look after Barney.

Another walker here... it's getting rid of those excess mince pies with brandy butter!

The fields are now under 2 feet of snow. I cannot get my car out, and have in fact just tried getting out of the house but am going to have to get someone to dig me out from the outside as the door is wedged up against snow (and that's up a step). Suppose I could jump from the upstairs window - soft landing.

I think we should try to have a sense of humour about it if I'm honest. We cannot change the weather and other countries always seem to manage by pulling together and getting through it. Only in the UK do we sit and whinge (same goes for rain, long dry spells, wind, too hot, too cold...) - we could be starving in an African drought or similar, so let's get things into perspective. It's character building afterall!

(I'll let you know after another fortnight of it whether my opinion has altered somewhat
