Anyone else not able to have straw this winter?

We have just combined our wheat and baled 200 small bales yesterday and then stopped after 200 as it looked awful. Brought a bale to show the liveries and they agreed that it was unusable for horses. It's not only ridiculously dusty, it also resembles chaff!!! We're not the only ones, 99% of farmers around here haven't bothered baling their straw and most didn't have an option as it was black and rotten anyway.

Luckily only 3 liveries are on straw, the rest of us are on shavings, and they all understand the situation........after all no one can change the weather.

So is anyone else in the same boat?

Just a damn shame we didn't bale more last year! :( But hindsight it such a great thing.
 
Having watched the combine working last night and the enormous dust cloud that engulfed the area I can't see me rushing to buy straw. Lets hope for a decent winter and leave the babies out 24/7 like we managed last year.
 
I am in Hertfordshire and although there will be a shortage of good quality hay - the farmers have said it is the best Straw they have ever had! Bright yellow good quality and £20 for a huge rectangle bale.
 
That's amazing! We have made fantastic hay, but yep our straw is AWFUL, should have taken some photos actually, it's not even yellow, it's brown :(

I am too hoping for another good winter, our ground will not cope well if we have a really wet winter.
 
Bedford area lots of straw with a marvellous amount of black grass in it will use if for my two horses no problems and tons of straw being baled either for Wales or other farming areas or power stations.
 
baling some lovely srtraw across the road from me now! in stratford upon avon! i dont use straw at all hate the stuff! mine are al on shavings! you must be on very wet clay!
 
No, not really, we always have all year turnout, it's not heavy clay, we've just had a LOT of rain, 10 days ago we had 2 inches in 3 days!!!

Anyway, we've located some straw today.....and very cheaply so the liveries are happy.

I hate straw too, don't understand why people like it.
