I am very over excited by the thought of having a polo lesson for the first time. But I can't phone the club! I have this weird phobia of not liking telephones, especially calling numbers I never have. I guess I'm afraid I'll sound stupid. I have been trying to book a lesson for two weeks but haven't been able to call! It's so annoying! Anyone else have this thing?
 
Me. I don't really like phones at all and only keep mine for making appointments with the vet/farrier/transporters etc. Don't much ring anyone else on it and don't give my number out. Hardly anyone's got it, definitely didn't give my Mum my number, lol! My OH is annoying enough, ringing me for nothing :D
 
I think it is quite normal for people who aren't used to speaking on the phone to get nervous and flustered.

Best advice I can give you is to make yourself a little list of what you want to say and ask. Once you have them on the phone I am sure you will be fine!

Alternatively you could just pop down there in person.

Although I don't have a problem phoning companies or strangers. I don't like phoning people I half know. You know - people I have met in person a handful of times. I worry that I won't recognise their voice or end up talking to the wrong person (although in fairness, this has happened to me. A boy I liked at school (many years ago now) let his brother speak to me for a whole ten minutes before I realised I was speaking to the wrong person :mad: )

I also hate speaking to my husband's relatives on the phone - even the ones I get on well with. Again, I think it is the fear of speaking to the wrong person that does it.

Me, I used to absolutely hate it - however have ended up in a job where I unfortunately have to answer the phone non-stop for 9 hours a day and have to say that my fear is definitely not what it used to be!
 
I don't like the vagueries of telephone etiquette, or the difficulty when you mishear something and have no other clues to work out what they were trying to say, and prefer email. That said, I get most of my clients via the 'phone so just have to deal with it!
 
Eurgh, I hate talking on the phone. I avoid it at all costs, even with people I know. Especially because my phone voice is quite high, people think I'm a child!! I get salesman saying "can you put your mum or dad on the phone?". :mad3:
 
I have this issue, I also can't listen to voicemail. Communicating with people is part of my job but I do as much as I can over email but its not possible all the time. The voicemail thing I think stems from a personal experience I had about 10 years ago, but I should be over it by now!

I don't like phones because I'm contacted a lot for business and just 2 or 3 phone calls a day can take so much out of my day so I ask everyone to email me then I can reply when it's convenient. I check emails as soon as they come in and if a reply is needed immediately then I reply, if not I leave it till later. Hardly anyone has my cellphone number and I discourage people from calling my home phone. It's not that I have a problem speaking to people on the phone, quite the opposite really, I can get into big conversations with chatty people lol!

That's why I don't like my OH ringing me, he can talk the hind legs off a donkey. He rang three times in quick succession the other day for nothing in particular, after that I started rejecting the calls. Stuff to do.

I don't think your phone is working he says. Yes, it's fine, I was just ignoring you, says I :p
 
I hate phones. Calling is worse than answering.

My last job was a a swithchboard operator taking an average 100 calls per hour.
 
I hate telephones with a vengeance!

I was called to the phone some time ago by a magazine trying to sell me advertising space. I wasn't very polite but they promised to send me some free copies to convince me how great the magazine was.

The magazines duly arrived -- complete with a profile of myself, obviously for internal use and included by accident. "Stroppy farmer who does not like being telephoned. Probably a waste of time but keep trying".

I had great fun returning that to them!!! Fortunately for them, I have a sense of humour!

These days I have a Truecall machine. Probably the best £100 I have ever spent. The peace is bliss.
 
Another who hates making calls, have to do it for my business and spent a lotif time making calls as part of my last job. The invention of email was a godsend - so glad many people use this as first port of call now!!!
 
DR, that's brilliant. Just brilliant.

I hate the house phone ringing. It sets me right on edge. If I bother to answer it, the poor sod trying to sell me something on the other end usually gets a mouthful :o

When I get a nuisance call, I just press the # key and they disappear -- for ever! Some telesales companies use different numbers but all from the same exchange, so you can block the whole exchange. Or have a password for your friends to use. There's lot of features, so many you might have problems setting it up at first. But you can phone through and get a human speaking perfect English to do that for you. It is all quite painless.

I've no connection with the company except for being a happy customer. I found I'd even blocked Truecall, but they worked out what I'd done (I'd blocked all London and Withheld Number calls) and still got through to sort out my problem. My only grumble is the answering machine isn't very loud or easy to understand but that can't be helped.
