Okay with the new horse have been a lot of new rugs, I didn't have a thing to fit her!

BUT.... what I have noticed with so called HEAVY rugs is that they no longer expand like they used to, it would seem gone are the days when you regretted getting a rug out of a bag to have a look and regretting it as it was hard to get back in the bag!

I have bought a Weatherbeeta Belmont, marked on the bag as HEAVY, it is no thicker than a medium, also an Amigo Insulator, supposedly a 300g, it is as flat as a pancake, and have not expanded at all, hardly worth the £60 it will have to do as an under rug, I suppose!

any one have any tips on getting these rugs to plump up?

Perhaps the new rugs use different technology and more dense fillings, so the rugs are still as warm but not as 'puffy' looking?

Not sure if the fact they are thinner makes them less warm. I think the process of making them has changed the manufacturing process makes them more compressed and less bulky to handle. I have noticed the same thing with duvets the high tog rating used to be mega thick thay are now much thinner but just as warm.

Some makes have never been as thick as others. Certainly Horseware Rhino and Rambo have never been as thick and are lighter to handle than other makes. It doesn't make a difference to the warmth of them. they are just denser.

My guess would be the type of fillings used.

In sleeping bags warmer doesn't necessarily mean thicker or weigh more. Especially the more expensive sleeping bags. Thinner and lighter without losing the warmth is what we look for when sleeping bag shopping.

they use poly warm stuff inside them so they dont weigh as much but are as warm as an original heavy weight :) also heavy's come in different gram fillings too so you can get a light heavy or a heavy heavy if you know what i mean :o

I have a Derby house 360g which is puffy! He's had it on for about a month now and is still puffy and lovely! :) Neck cover isnt really long enough but he is a rather long necked wb :)

I know all the new amigo's are denser and lighter to handle and i haven't noticed any difference in warmth or than than being better than before :)

As it's the air that holds the heat I'd expect them to be lighter but thicker if they're warmer, not thinner. Primaloft etc, the really top end human synthetic insulation fabrics, are poofier the warmer they are. I had Lansdown rugs for my boy which are Thinsulate and they are thick but light. I'd then expect them to pack down well, so they look thinner when compressed but definitely not thinner when plumped up.

Not bought a horse rug in a long time!
