I recently bought a fairly poor thoroughbred.

he is quite hairy so i knew the first few days would be hit and miss with the rugs but i was really surprised!!

I put a heavyweight on for the first few nights (300g) and he seemed fine but then the next morning when i arrived he was sweating so that night i put a thin fleece under his lightweight (100g) stable rug and he was still sweating this morning!!!

Tonight i have left him with just the 100g and hope he will be o.k in the morning.

Not sure if he is just warm enough with all his hair and a thin rug or if he is unwell maybe :-/

Anyone else have a thoroughbred that doesnt need much rugging???

My tb doesn't need a lot of rugging, she lives out 24/7 so does have heavyweights in very poor weather but as long as she is dry she holds her heat very well. If she has a lightweight on and the sun comes out for even 5 mins she usually gets sweaty!

As he s new is their any signs that he has been stressy through the night which may have caused him to sweat?

Yep. One of mine is a very 'hot' horse. Wintered out naked last year, in a medium weight at the moment and a rainsheet on milder days as he's 'Irish' clipped. Still too bloody hot!

Yep, both mine and my sisters TBs get hot easily. They have less rugs on than the hairy old cob despite having finer coats and chaser clips. Think they're hot blooded through and through.

Mine didn't when he was younger. He was fine in a MW in the depths of winter.

He's now an old man so feels the cold a lot more!

My TB doesn't need that much rugging as she is unclipped anyway but she's only in a medium at the moment and is just about right IMO. I know of some in multiple rugs and heavyweights too but horses for courses and all that :) Have you ruled out that he is not stress related sweating?? If mine is stressing or had a run around she'll be sweating underneath rugs. I'd be surprised if he was sweating cobs in a fleece or LW and wasn't stressing in some way.

I had one, bred to race although never actually did,who lived out 24/7 all year round unrugged. If I rugged her,she would trash it to remove it!
Was not rugged when she got to 24 and wasn't holding weight too well.she then kept it on!

When I had aTB, he didn't need much rugging. I think the heaviest rug he had was a medium weight with a neck, and even then he could get a sweat on. He was always the last to be rugged and the first to go rug less.

Yep, I've got one who was bred to race but didn't make the height.

She hates being too hot and will let me know if she is. Last year she had a full clip and wore a 300g tumour rug and was toasty in freezing weather on milder days she would only wear a 170g rug.

This year she hasn't been in a heavyweight at all, she's got a 200g turnout masta And has a trace clip this year she is toasty on slightly chillier days I add a fleece under neath but that's as much as she gets :)

I always use the ears and put my hand under the rugs to see if she's too hot or cold, generally I get it right. But she isn't one of these horses you see wearing tons of rugs because there owners are cold and therefore they automatically think the horse is!

I have a TBx and a KWPN out unclipped and unrugged 24/7 right now. The TBx 4 yr old did look a little miserable this morning with the snow as it was wet and horrid. When we had the really big snow a few weeks back she was fine as she didn't really get wet. It doesn't seem to be the cold that bothers her - just being wet through, and even then she was actually warm up between her front legs where I feel them and at the base of her ears. Was just a bit fed up and I think will be glad to get back into work in a few weeks time.

KWPN has never looked as of she was even thinking about the possibility of a rug all through this horrid weather - but then she does have her internal hot water bottle due to emerge early April..... :)

I do! Mine has the coat of a NF pony and this is the first year I have had her un-clipped. This is the third winter I have had her.
When fully clipped she has no more than a med combo and this year she has had a 200g standard neck in all types of weather and is toasty warm all of the time and held her weight perfectly, if not a little too well!

A yard I used to work at had all the broodmares and youngsters living out un-rugged. Shelter and ad lib hay. They grew lovely big coats and seemed pretty happy even in -10 temps.

The broodmares had previously been racing mares living a very cushy life being stabled, turn out, warm showers, lots of rugs etc. They coped very well to being un-rugged and out 24/7 in all weathers!

Yep I have a 'hot' mare even in sub zero temps never got rugged up too much she's only in med no neck turnout whilst its nippy but will change that too her usual l/w stable rug as her turnout is suspended due to waterlogged fields at mo :(
Nice not to rug up loads

Mine is tricky to rug as hates being wet & cold & starts dropping weight but get it slightly wrong & he over heats & pours with sweat!

Yep, another one here with a hot horse. Full TB 10yo lives out 24/7 and currently in a lightweight as it has been very windy (wind is worse than rain). He is not clipped and doesnt have a super long or think coat, but he really only wears the lightweight to give me a fighting chance of being able to clean him up to be able to ride!

Worried that he is too hot even with a lightweight! when i check his elbow he is roasting hot...

Yep, I have another one. Our yard is full of double rugged cobs but my chaser clipped TB is in either a fleece or a lightweight stable rug and holds his weight fine all winter.

Mine is upclipped in a 50grm lived in it all winter, just to keep the chill off. He would much rather be naked. The other extreme a tb up the road I went to see had 5! Yes 5 rugs on, it had a bum like a cow, poor thing was sweating like crazy. Owner had been feeling ear tips! His poor armpits were soaking.

I used to have a TB who only ever needed lightly rugging, I went out and bought a huge winter wardrobe for her as she wouldn't be stabled and it was a cold winter - she didnt need them! I think her heaviest rug was 150g. She was unclipped though x
