Anyone else putting horses out 24/7

Turned our mare out at the begining of March, and has been naked of a night time for about a week now, no hard feed, and just a net full of hay between 2, and off to stud for her today! so just grass keep, think it was harder for me than her, exciting time and fingers crossed.

Star is in at night, and out during the day. She does not want to come in at all, however, she can go out full time at Easter.
YO says it's too cold at night, and they will eat to keep warm, so the grass won't last very long.
It's nice know that there is an end to the mucking out in sight though.

Incidentally, she's stopped eating her hay at night - and barely gets through 1 slice, so maybe it's good for her waistline. Obviously, grass tastes better.

mines in in no rugs and was last clipped in october and will be going out 24/7 on tuesday with a medium to lightweight turn out

im such a harsh mummy lol. i tried putting more rugs on but she just gets rediculously sweaty

Ours all live out 24/7, TBs or not. Rugs come off when forecast says temp not going to drop below 5C (40F) for that particular night, and I just listen to the forecast every day, three times a day. Heavy rain accompanied by high winds, gales, snow, rugs on. Light drizzle, little wind, mild temps, rugs off.

I'm not unduly hard, but a horse is a horse! They have superb insulation of their own unless they're clipped. what's far more important if you're turning them out is how much natural shelter there is in their field.

God, makes you wonder how they all survived before human's came along ;-)

Ours are out 24/7 all year. Rugs came off 3weeks ago for the bigger pansy's. Sensible tough horses have been rugless for month+. They've not dissolved yet and are depressing well covered already:-(

Ours went out last Thursday! They had full clips at the end of Jan but their summer coats are through so haven't had rugs on for the last few weeks. They are both good doers and on restricted grazing but have a feed of Spillers lite balancer with handful of hifi at night. They are so happy to be out 24/7!

Most of mine live out. I have three in by night at the mo, one being my show filly, soooo tempted to leave them out over night, but i chicken out about 7.30 pm lol

Sooo glad I have read this, thank you! My two year old lives out 24/7 and he copes very well, so do I. But I have just made the decision to move my pampered cob to go and live out with him at the end of this month, he will be fine I know this deep down so reading this has put me back on planet earth!!! After having him for 9 years this will be the first time he has lived out, but a field shelter is on order - very exciting so I know he has shelter if he choses to use it. I did wake up in the middle of the night last week when it was pouring with rain worrying about how he would cope (even though he is still in now). But now I am just thinking of the huge amount I will save each month and will actualy be able to afford to compete again and maybe save some £ something never done before!! Heres to living out!

My five year old arab mare lives out 24/7 all year round. It makes her so much happier than when she used to come in. She used to be stressy and a bit spooky, now she is soo chilled and laid back. She has a heavy weight Bucas for minus temperatures, and a lighter one for general cold. She is now naked and seems very happy - and still warm to touch - despite the fact the I felt freezing!

She copes really well, even when it hit -15 last year and she had icicles on her beard and ear hair, she was still toasty under her blanket and she is a very expressive mare who always lets you know when she is unhappy.

The only downside we had was we are in a clay area so for the non-frozen part of the winter she has to wade through deep clay to get in and out of the field, but most of it drains reasonably well as it is on a hill, and so far for the four years i have had her, she hasn't succumbed to mud fever, it just means she goes into winter with great hooves and we have to wait for the heels to recover in the spring.

Mine are out all year round.

My Mini Shetland is out all year round too. Well the winter just gone he was in a barn with some young showjumpers keeping them company. He did not have any rugs on this time either and he looks very well, maybe a little too well:rolleyes:. He loves being out and gets a bit ratty if hes in a stable so I keep him out for his sanity :D

I put mine out 24/7 on the 10th April. She was out 2 days and went and sliced her leg open. So I decided she was trying to tell me she wanted to come in. Well she still out and now on vets orders to keep her moving to keep the swelling down. haha. Dont think she was very impressed to be honest.

mine have been out for the last 2weeks bar one night when it went cold. I am making the most of the dry weather, they are naked in day when its dry, they have a rain sheet on overnight. they will be out for the forseeable future at this rate too!! Although we do need some drizzle for a few days to get the grass to grow! Aslong as its warm rain and not really horrible they will stop out still!! I am fed up of stables!

Mine TB mare has been out since Feb. Took rug off her totally on Saturday. Ideally she could do with one on overnight, but not part of yard package, so has to go without.
